White-headed Woodpecker

Here are some pictures of White-headed Woodpeckers from my research project. I have been studying the breeding biology of this species for the last 8 years. This year, I am finally able to start color-banding them to determine longevity and age of the birds on territories. Also, a phd student is doing her dissertation work on White-headed Woodpeckers by affixing transmitters to them so she can track them to determine year-round homerange sizes.

This first picture is a male that I am holding that has a transmitter mounted to his back via a back-pack style harness (you can see the antenna). However, this bird could not fly normally (but it is now) after being released so the doctoral student is going to switch to a tail mounted transmitter which is less intrusive, but the birds will have to be recaptured after they molt in August/September.

This second picture is a female that we have color-banded (the male above was color-banded as well) on a different territory.
