Clutch of 8

Some of you know I conduct research on cavity nesting birds in tree cavities, not nest boxes. One of the species I study is the Western Bluebird. This year I had a nest with 8 eggs and upon last check, all 8 eggs have hatched. Guess Mom and Dad will have their beaks full trying to feed all those babies.

This is the first nest out of approximately 130 WEBL nests I have monitored with 8 eggs.

Oh my gosh, I hope that's a big cavity! It must be difficult to monitor a tree cavity ... now that's dedication.

Wow-- that's a lot!
We have questions - do you think all 8 will make it? Was there a large gap between the hatching of the first and last babies? Do you have any pics?
Those parents aren't going to have a minute spare are they??

The adjustment was per the owner's manual which basically was moving the adjuster up or down after loosening the lock nuts to a certain extent in order to tighten the cable (I think). I did that and still the problem persists. Somehow I feel that the clutch cable is not as tight as it could be when I engage the clutch lever. When I push the clutch lever to hold it against the handlebar, the lever itself appeared not taut at all.

You should probably be able to adapt a ready made T-bar puller (slotted bar with big pusher bolt in center) to the clutch adapter plate you have fabricated. Doing so would be faster (and a bit more versatile) than making your own "purpose built" pusher bar. Another benefit of using a ready made one is that the actual pusher bolt will likely have a low friction cone insert in the end to engage the dimple of the crankshaft protection bolt. I strongly suggest using a protection bolt as described because simply engaging the end of a pusher bolt directly to the threaded hole in the crankshaft center is to risk swelling the crank diameter or "boogering" the threads (or both) if the bearing is stuck "like a bear". Sometimes a ready made T-bar puller comes with a variety of low friction tips to rest against different types of shaft ends. If the kit comes with a "flat end" type of tip (non conical shape) you can forgo the protection bolt arrangement and place the flat tip right onto the end of the crank.

had a similar problem. The engine mount bolt that grounded the PTO black ground wire was loose- causing the pto to work erratically. To see this bolt (13mm i Think) you will have to lie on your back and look under the machine. It is above the front steering arm of the right tire. If the wire is dangling you will need a new bolt. Maryann - My Rosemary mounds are planted out in an open area of my xeriscape in full sun, are 4' tall and over 9' across. So we could invite the whole forum and any folks they know from the Italian community over for pasta and still do no more than lightly prune them. LOL Sherry - Both males and females have the feather top knot, although on the males it is larger and more showy. Even the little puff ball babies have a small crown that looks like a Mohawk at the moment. Sadly the male only has 6 babies left today. The sky bandit (pigeon) that attacked them yesterday evening at my feeders met his maker (pellet pistol). But overnight something got two of them. No idea if it was a domestic cat, raptor, bobcat, coyote or fox that got the mother... the same or a smaller predatory bird, large whiptailed or collard lizard or a ratttlesnake that got the babies. But without the mother to help care for and protect them while still so small, it doesn't look good for this families family tree. While I have about 20-25 pairs that visit my feeders every day, only a couple other pairs have brought babies along with so far when normally by now I am up to my shoulders in baby quail. Makes me wonder if the extended cold thunderstorms and winds we had a while back right after 2-3 record setting hot days might of killed most of this years hatch.

I didn't get any pics of the babies. My technician checked the nest and said she counted 8 babies. I was quite surprised.

You might enjoy seeing these Hairy Woodpecker chicks I took a pic of on my monitoring device.

The pic isn't great since I took it of the monitor screen. They are about 20-21 days old and will fledge around 27-28 days old. There are 2 males visible and their sister is sort of visible on the left and below the boys. Not much room in there when they all start to get big. I guess someone has to be low man or lady on the totem pole. LOL. They had 5 eggs but 2 didn't hatch.

The cavity is in a ponderosa pine snag.

Those Hairy chicks are too cute!!

In your research, do you see a lot of predation on the cavities? Are they manmade cavities in existing trees?

The birds I study are nesting in natural cavities, not manmade. Of course, the woodpeckers excavate their own and then the Western Bluebird nests I monitor are in abandoned woodpecker cavities.

As far as nest success goes, which is calcuated with a technique based on number of days a given nest is active and then pooled over all nests, it ranges from a high of about an 85% probability of success for Hairy and White-headed Woodpeckers to about 65% for Western Bluebirds. These probabilities of success are much higher than open-cup nesters such as finches, tanagers, vireos, etc, which can be as low as 15-20%.

The dominant predators on my sites are yellow-pine chipmunks, Douglas squirrels, and black bears.

Interesting! When you said "monitor" I was picturing manmade tree cavities at a convenient level. I'm guessing a lot of the natural cavities are high up and monitored with cameras.

Bear predation!! That would be an awful sight. My biggest problem in my area are flying squirrels.
