Hi Everyone! We have had 7.6" of rainfall at our house since 11 a.m. Our local Emergency Manager just declared a state of emergency here. Randy, I am beyond wet and have made it all the way to soggy. : ) Scott, I know all the ranchers are breathing a big sigh of relief. Now, at least, they'll have water for all the cattle for at least the next few months. One told me the other day that if rain didn't fall he wouldn't have enough growth in the pastures to feed all the calves born this spring, so I'm guessing he'll be OK now. This rain can't hurt the winter wheat because most of it froze when we had that late freeze down to 19 degrees. Unfortunately, some of the pastures are flooded and now some fire depts. and sherriff's deputies are out helping ranchers move cattle out of flooded pastures and onto higher ground. It is crazy how quickly you can lurch from one type of disaster to another. I haven't looked at the radar loop lately, but I think DH is still dry in Dallas. The storm that has arrived here after pounding St. Jo in Montague County has heavy lightning. I think that I may have to start over from scratch with the garden. I may be able to save the tomatoes by digging them up and putting them in pots, but am wondering about the onions, broccoli, cabbage, herbs and potatoes. They're in raised beds, but this rain and the underground "stream" of water from the neighbor's woodland that sits higher than the garden probably will nullify the raised beds. I am sitting in the middle of a 3-acre lake at this point. I am hoping our rainfall will recharge the aquifer and that will somehow benefit the springs, Scott. Often, when it rains this much here, the aquifer gains water for days and days afterward. I wish we could send some of this water up north to them there. I need to go look at the radar and see how much longer this will last. Moni, Two inches is nice and will make your landscape green and lovely. Lisa, If I hadn't emptied out the rain gauge so it wouldn't overflow, it'd be overflowing now. I hope yours is nice and full. OK, y'all, Conditions area deteriorating right and left and numerous fire depts. and sherriff's deputies and city police officers and OHP and tow truck drivers are running all over the county doing rescues, working accidents, pulling people out of flooded areas, moving cattle to higher ground, etc. It is a zoo here. The satellite TV has been out since the rain started and the power keeps coming and going. Somewhere I lost my house keys while putting up all the animals as the rain began. DS said that if I dropped them outside, they're in Lake Texoma by now. : ) Will report on additional rainfall later. I don't understand why everything here is at such extremes--from no rain for months to probably 8" in 1/4 of a day. It is crazy. Dawn

Nancy, thanks so much for posting for me. When I phoned we were still in shock and I'm sure I wasn't very coherent. It was a rough couple days. Linda, the antique furniture is probably a total loss. If it was on the floor - it's water damaged. I've got a call into our antique broker but haven't yet been able to reach him to discuss possible repairs (?). It's possible he's also flooded. Still, once it's been flooded - never the same and value will be severely reduced, as you know. So, we'll most likely let the insurance deal with them on our claim. :( We were bemoaning the loss of the antique pieces last night before we fell asleep. Every one had a story that meant a lot to us. Truthfully though, we have so much to worry about right now that we haven't focused on their loss - yet. The structure itself held well so we had no interior wind damage to rattle things around. That means the mulberry is okay as are all of the 18th century wine glasses and decanters. We lost a considerable number of reference books though and you know how hard those are to come by. I also lost my Yamaha Clavinova. :( Things like Dad's accordion we took with us as well as all his sheet music. I lost some genealogy. That's heartbreaking. I'm still working on the inventory list. That goodness we kept meticulous records, receipts, and have a thorough professional appraisal as an addendum to our policy. It cost a bit more in premiums but not nearly as much as the losses. Lpink, have you considered coming through CT to New London and taking the ferry over to LI, going to get your aunt/uncle, and bringing them back the same way? We have ample gas available in CT and there's been virtually no looting concerns. It's a mess here but we are up and running again and safe. The ferry is running again. And thanks so much for you thoughts. Every one means so much now. Bumblebeez - thanks so much. Please keep those best wishes coming. It's going to be a long haul, months not weeks. Chase, on behalf of all Sandy's victims thank you for your Red Cross donation. The Red Cross is doing so much for so many across the region. They are always first on the scene and last to leave. Again, thank you. FEMA seems, so far, to be on top of things. It only took 20 minutes to fill out forms, register, get assigned a representative, etc. and we've received several phone calls from FEMA already and it's only been a week today Sandy paid us a visit. We have an appointment Friday at FEMA's temporary office here in Stonington. /tricia

These last photos were a great tutorial for me on erosion, overgrazing, and desertification. Looking at these, I think I now know what they mean when they say that the Big Bend region is plagued by overgrazing. A lot of the former ranch land out there looks a lot like your 3rd picture: a landscape of mostly sand, punctuated by lonely trees jutting out. I figured it was caused by drought or wildfire or was just the natural look of the land. But it's none of those things. It should be either be a lush prairie or a healthy-looking woods - more like your other pictures. The ground should never look like sand. Not unless you're on a beach or in the Sahara Desert. This also explains why beaches look this way. The waves continually strip all vegetation and nutrients away. And that's why coastlines are always eroding and moving. There's nothing to anchor them. Ecologically-speaking, a sandy landscape is a dead one. If you see sandy ground, you're looking at ground that was ecologically destroyed. I think it's amazing that you're bringing it back. All it needs is a number of years of decomposing leaf litter to stay in place and the worms and bugs and microorganisms will return and revert into living soil once again. Much of my yard was badly-eroded, unmulched and swept clean leaf litter for many, many years by previous owners. It looked "clean" to them. That's how most folks in my neighborhood still keep much of their yards. Bare dirt. The wind blows some of it away. Every time it rains, more of it washes away. It gets drier and drier and lower and lower in a downward spiral. My yard must have gone down at least 6 inches in depth over the years. Then I started to let leaf litter accumulate on the ground year-round. Now I'm the oddball freak of my neighborhood. But things actually grow in that area now. It's only 2 or 3 years later. Before that, nothing would grow. Not even weeds. It was almost as bad as the land in your 3rd picture. But now the soil level has raised maybe an inch. I find earthworms and bugs in it now. It's slowly coming back to life.

I agree with others who say this is a municipal issue; we have the same problems in Seattle where we got 48 inches of rain this winter. The city is responsible for keeping water from the street from entering your property, and you are responsible for the water that falls on your property (roof, driveway, etc.) Your side neighbors are responsible for managing the water that falls on theirs, and they are not allowed to divert it to yours. Get sandbags immediately across the driveway at the street, and also around your house. Then contact the city, and have them inspect the situation. I cannot stress this enough. Finally, manage the water you have by ensuring you have downspouts that direct water away from your house and garage into swales on your property, so that the water is absorbed into your landscape. Consider this to be a landscaping opportunity, because that extra water will support a beautiful garden, as well as being a responsible neighbor and protecting your investment as a homeowner.

I guess that you are not going to support your child in the game. Are you pulling the washing of the uniform duty?

We have 2" and counting in our gage up hill from you Lou. It looks like they grow stronger as they move over you. The solid mass of storm is still to the west.

This should have some positive effect on the lakes on the Colorado river. A lot of this is upstream from the damns. The Pedernales is getting a lot also. I have my fingers crossed. We really need this. Its flooding in Dryden area. The cactus are getting drenched.

We just had another inch in a half hour. And it is raining on the other side of the hill. so I suspect we will be hit again. The totals west of here must be impressive because we are still in the spotty rainstorm belt. It might even stop for awhile before the big mass moves in.

Five and a half inches here in east Texas when I emptied my rain gauge about an hour ago... YIPPEE!!!

I don't know about washing Drill Team uniforms... Lol

It has been raining nonstop for quite a while. I have rain gauge but it is on the fence in the back so I'll have to wait for the rain to stop to check it out.

We need bigger storm to park over Pendernales watershed to provide as much water run off into Lake Travis. It did seem to get stronger and bigger lately.

Glad so many of you are getting good amounts of rain. So far this week we have had 2-2/10" rain. This is the first rain we have received since mid-August when we had 2" over a week's time.

Lake Meredith has shown "0" water amount contained for at least a couple of years in the state water reservoir reports. Last night the weather report on a local channel showed the level of water in LM as "rising"......wow. I remember back in 1997 (the last time we took the boat to LM) that we still had over 80' of water there.

Hope and pray we all continue to get good rains and that Texas lands recover from the droughts we have all experienced over the last 2 plus years.

No more rain here YET, but Bob said it was raining so hard up around New Braunfels mid morning that it was hard to see to drive.

Congratulations on the rain received as reported above!

Minutes later: I spoke too soon. It's now raining nicely :-)

Rain started here Thursday evening and continued until Friday afternoon, a few heavy showers but mostly just a gentle steady rain. I have no rain gauge but the yard looks quenched. I am so thankful!

We received 1 3/4" yesterday. Would be nice to see some more, but the forecast doesn't show any chances left! Still need to see water in the creek.

We ended up with about 4 ". No flooding of the Pedernales rivers. There should have been. The dry hills just sucked it up. Lake travis is up a foot in 3 days. 61' more to go. Depressing and worrisome to realize how much of a flood we need to correct this trend. Lake Buchannon is up an inch. They expect a little more but not anywhere nears enough to change anything except it will be a few days before people water their yards around here.

I did NOT get the downpour I was hoping for, but I am so grateful for what I did get.................made the brown spots in my grass green up even though it put little water in my pond.

5 inches for me. Unfortunately, the entire Lake Travis watershed did not get that kind of amount of rainfall.

I went to LCRA and saw rather low flow on Pendernales. Unfortunate.

Received 3" of rain in NW Austin. I was sad to see the majority of the front move east, but 3" is nice to get. I have a creek bed at the edge of my property and it wasn't as swollen as I would have expected considering how heavy the rain fell at times.

There is a 30-40% chance of rain again next weekend for us, so here's to more rain! If we don't get a bunch soon, Austin will likely go into stage 3 water restrictions. I believe if Lake Travis drops below 615 feet (we're at 619.5 now), that triggers stage 3.

WOW!!! Blue sky and 72F and it is in the AFTERNOON am I hallucinating. It is not Late October yet. 20,000 gallons of rainwater in my tanks. All is good.

It sure is a gorgeous day! Sadly, hundreds of sunflowers seeds that birds kicked off bird feeder (looking for something else?) have germinated on the ground. :-(
