Strangest fledge yet.

They must have known I had written "fledge" on my calendar for today (though I have been watching for 2 days). Day 18 and at 11:45 the first baby falls out of the hole and is hanging on for dear life flapping like mad. For a split second I though he might be caught in the sparrow spooker that had blown partially in front of the hole but Mom and Dad came to the rescue and convinced him to let go and flew him up to a tree. Meanwhile baby 2 dives out and is hanging on the chicken wire fence while baby 3 flies out like a champ to the top of the fence. Baby 4 flew the farthest (good little flyer)paused a moment and flew right up into a tall tree. Baby 5 jumps out and thud, hits the ground just a foot from the box. It is now only 11:50. 5 babies out in 5 minutes 2 up in the trees 2 on the fence and 1 on the ground. The parents are frantically flying around trying to account for all babies and trying to get the one on the ground into the air. He's not a flyer but he's a heck of a hopper! He went off like a road runner. No way to catch that baby even if the parents would let me near him. Lots of cover here in the woods and he was out of sight in a flash (in the same area all the others flew to) so he knew where he was going and was not about to be left behind. I believe he has made it to the trees now there is no peeping from the ground. The parents are still hanging around the box (no babies in there) but also taking worms to the trees. They seem pretty calm now except when I go near the box. They will stay close for a while and I will be able to monitor by ear, nice calm coos and no squabbling means all is well....What a day I am exhausted! LOL
