Can anyone identify this bird?

This pretty green bird has never before appeared in our yard, and he bonked his head on our patio door. He has an orange-yellow chest and a bit of blue around his face.

This could be a female or 1st-summer male Painted Bunting but that species has a very limited range. It would be helpful to know your location.

Thanks! Painted Buntings are here in Oklahoma although I have never seen one before. As much as I have wanted to see a mature male with all the colors, I never thought to consider the females and immature males. I will now listen for this one's song, and hope to see him/her again.

Thanks, BN, for the explanation. It does make sense, and I see House Finches fairly often here, mostly in the winter. I can see the House Finch in the body and head, it was just the tail that looked wrong, but worn feathers are reasonable. I just found this photo of half of a male House Finch from May 22, 2012, and the tail also looks darkish and long. I rarely see Purple Finches but I found an old photo from Jan. 4, 2009 of what I think was a male Purple Finch with a similar back view. The color is definitely in the raspberry range. Sometimes there are advantages to keeping way too many photos on your computer. Thanks again - that mystery photo was really annoying me. Claire

Too small for a Brown Thrasher,and beak is too small too.It looks to be a baby Wood thrush,or a Hermit,Swainson's,or Gray cheeked.They like hanging around on the ground.Its markings will change a bit,and the corners of its beak on the sides will disappear.Robins are in the Thrush family,and you can see it looks alot like a baby Robin.

With this bird, I am leaning toward 1st-summer male due to the blue feathers around the facial area. If you end up hearing him sing please update us!

The implication I took is that the bird was fine. I don't know what other conclusion or assumptions could have been drawn from this series of exchanges.

Implication? Who said it flew off?

Well, that would be a good thing. I hope so.

The wing is drooped which often indicates an injury.

The OP mentioned the hopes of seeing the bird again, which implies it left the area. Hopefully by wing.

I've taken several pictures of birds sitting on concrete and at the same angle. All were after they had hit one of our windows. The droopy wing is a common characteristic during the recovery. I don't know if some of them die later from the collision, but many do fly away.

We do what we can to prevent this, but during migration time, it still happens occasionally.
