Claire, I think the little video was taken in San Diego, California, not far from a zoo. Escapee? Or something native.

When I say under the eaves, actually, there was a little opening under the eave that went into the attic, if that makes sense. We built this house 3 years ago and we never even noticed the space. That's how small it is. They were inside of that space, not on the outside of the house. I checked pics of starlings, crows, cowbirds and grackles, and they most resembled grackles. They had long tails, and long dark beaks, and really looked like miniature crows. I do think they were grackles. As of today, we believe they are gone. They sure were messy little things. My husband is going up into the attic this weekend to see what kind of mess they made in there. I'm not sure that where the nest is will be accessible from the attic however, because the room that the opening was over is a room with a cathedral ceiling. If he can't get to it from the attic, he will have to seal it up from the outside. The space is so small that he will not be able to see inside to observe the nest or the mess from the outside.

Crows aren't friendly or neighborly. They look out for each other but that's where it ends. They routinely steal nestlings and fledglings of small songbirds and feed them to their young. If you care about songbirds in your garden, I wouldn't encourage crows. They do serve a purpose of scaring away hawks but usually they only bother larger hawks like red tails, not smaller ones like coopers or sharp shins. It's the smaller ones that take the songbirds. They will try to eat the food in your garden - they will eat just about anything.

I like her too, a natural simple beauty, not a glitzy glamorous look. I have a friend who does look like Sheryl Crow. DH was the first to comment on it, and now the resemblance just seems to get stronger when I see her. I've never heard my friend sing, though. ;o)

Here is a link to everything you need to know about Ravens. In fact from what it states they will be having it out with some Falcons very soon. That should be very interesting to watch. http://www.baltimoreravens.com/ To locate a crow roosting area just go out at dust or dawn and record the direction the crows are flying. Do this from more than one location then plot all of the direction onto a map. Where all of the lines cross is their roosting area. Wear boots if you plan on walking around in that woods as the ground could be covered a foot deep with their droppings. People have tried using fireworks at night to drive them off but most times they keep coming back. So think twice before you tempt them into hanging around…..

I didn't realize that was a video! The bird looks and sounds to me like some sort of raven, but my knowledge of corvids is really poor and there are a lot of people here who know much more than I do. Someone else will certainly chime in.

It looks like a brown raven, if there is such a thing, but I haven't heard a raven make that kind of honking sound. Maybe they do.

There is a Chihuahuan Raven found in the SW deserts that has a somewhat different sound. One could easily have wandered over to San Diego. They're usually all black though.

As for color, all I can think of is that it's a case of leucism with altered pigmentation. Here's a video of a White leucistic raven, but leucism can show up as brown colors too. There are a few raven calls at the beginning of the video before the music takes over.

Waiting for someone knowledgeable to appear.

Claire, I'm convinced you are right and it is a raven. Those vids were funny. I have always loved crows and ravens even if they are pests. Thank you for taking the time to help out with this.

With that big beak and guttural croaking i'm quite sure it's a raven. Have lots of both out here and there is no mistaking which is which
