Yellow-Breasted Chat

I heard a bird last night that I couldn't see, and I just couldn't figure out "who" it was. Didn't sound like a catbird or a Brown Thrasher, so I was thinking maybe a mockingbird? Then today, I finally saw it! Their chatter is very interesting!

When I lived in Indiana, this was one of my favorite birds. If you're lucky enough to watch and listen to one during its display flight, as it bobs up and down as though it's being dangled on a string, making all sorts of tweeting, chirping, and honking noises, it's one of the most entertaining displays I know of.

Its funny how some birds can have such colorful plumage, but be so hard to see! Funny you mention honking......that's exactly part of the "chat" that I really noticed and couldn't figure out. I'm so excited that this cool bird is around!

hmmmm Dirtgirl, I had no idea they were up at night. I would have bet it to be a mocker. Can you find it with your night vision binocs? (just kidding.....since you probably don't have any). I never thought I would tire of any birds songs either, but last summer, I had a red-eyed vireo around, who sang non-stop, all day. Alright already!! lol!

I heard it again this morning, so I got my binocs and tried to find it. It was very elusive. It was at the top of one of the black walnuts. Just could never see it. I don't think its an owl, or I probably would have been able to see it. I have gone through every bird song on my Audubon CD, and I just can't find the sound. It sounds like the first note that the bobwhite sings, but its continuous and starts out fast and slows down. Its a very musical tone (but monotone). Bobwhites don't get high in trees do they? gosh this is driving me crazy!

Gorgeous photos of a lovely bird. I agree with BN. Of the possibilities (grayish bird with sharply delineated yellow throat), this one doesn't show the wing bars of a Northern Parula, eye-ring is too weak for a Nasville Warbler, not marked enough to be a Magnolia or Yellow-throated Warbler, Canada Warblers have major eye-rings and marked chests, and, as stated, Yellow-breasted Chats have thick bills and bold facial markings. I'd call it a young male Common Yellowthroat. The bold yellow throat is a bit brighter than a female's, and I see the beginnings of a black mask on its face. Saw my first yellow breasted chat this week.

She/he sat and ate most of an apple.

Hope she comes back.
