Caged Bird feeders

Hello there,

I've been having problems with Grackles and other blackbirds emptying my feeders in a matter of hours, so I bought one of those tube feeders with a cage around it. I filled it with safflower seeds and thistle. I also put a birdbath next to it to try to get some of the songbirds to come back.

It's only been a couple days, but so far no birds are eating from the caged feeder.

My question is: Do they really squeeze through the holes to eat from these feeders?

And Also, It's been very hot and humid and I'm afraid the seed will go bad. Should I only be putting a small amount in feeder until they start eating it?

I here tons of birds out there, they're just not coming to my feeder :(

Any other suggestions are very welcomed!

Coincidence.

I came here to ask about finding the best price for safflower seed.

I am trying to encourage the Cardinals by feeding them safflower seeds. It is working to some degree.

Grackles are robbing me blind by scarfing up the black oil sunflower seeds and keeping the smaller birds away from it. The grackles have even punched holes in the long wire BOSF feeder. Guess there's nothing that can be done about them, but I'd like to find safflower seed at a better price than $2 a pound.

The grackles at my feeders push all the food onto the ground with their beaks, and then every critter around has a smÃ¶rgÃ¥sbord. I've got ducks, bunnies, squirrels, and a possum! I had 3 feeders and they would all be emptied in one day.

Maybe the tree just needs to get bigger ? I remember tons of birds and tons of cherries my growing up years at grandmas. Her trees were large, but we could use ladders and I climbed waaay up. We had plenty to make pies and put up for winter. My tree now is so old and huge, the only way I get any cherries are when the birds are kind enough to drop a few for me to pick up. I try to remember to always say thank you. As it stands, you have nothing to loose by experimenting with adding feeders. Currently I'm mostly winning in getting the squirrels to leave my finch feeders alone by feeding them separately each morning. Hi Maureen, How are you. We havent talked for quite a while. I have a suet feeder with a suet cake in it. Its got a copper colored top and has 3 little glass beads that hang off the bottom. I hung it up for a month and it was completely ignored! Lol! I guess I will just stick to regular birdfeeders. If you are still looking for one just let me know. its great talking to you again! Darla

Hi! Your feeder is neat, especially the way you've hung the tray on the bottom. The only thing I can think of, relative to your question about why birds aren't using that feeder, is that at this time of year it's not the feeder - there are so many insects, seeds, buds, etc. out there that haven't been available to the birds before spring, and I know that's where most of our birds are getting their nourishment. Even the gray catbirds that have been in the garden and birdbath haven't been visiting our fruit/jelly feeder. I've actually taken everything down except the nyjer feeder, and I keep the birdbaths filled and clean because all the birds come to those no matter what. On the other hand, we have a pair of goldfinches that visits our nyjer feeder every day at about 8 a.m. and 6 p.m., like clockwork. And more goldfinches than just those two take advantage of the feeder as well. So that feeder will stay up. This will work out - you could leave your feeder up and wait and see, birds may suddenly see it and use it. Good luck - Donna

Well Rachel, here I am, back a little wiser and a little chagrined. I walked to my window today only to see four sparrows crowded in my chickenwire-wrapped feeder! You are right, they ARE smart. So... I went out and made all of the larger holes smaller (pinched and wired them, very carefully). Back in the house I go and watch, and the house sparrows flap around and hang from the outside, confounded. A chickadee flies in, gets some seed, flies out, with the sparrows watching. Then one of the sparrows goes around the feeder and zips inside the cage. Then I am the one who is confounded! And to add insult to injury, a sparrow was eating nyjer seed out of the finch feeder! Of course I am a bit discouraged by this, (the cloud of sparrows flying out of my tree made me think of Albert Hitchcock's THE BIRDS), but I think what I'll do is take the feeders down and start over, being very stingy and careful with the seed (and only safflower). I will figure this out and I will check back here at the forum for advice. Thanks for reading my (not uncommon I guess) tale of woe. I might be down but I'm not out!

Saw some birds in the caged feeder today. It does work!

i think about the cage feeder my nephew built me as a craft project. It was made of wooden dowels on end on a platform with a plywood roof. the dowels were spaced about 1 1/2 inches apart and each painted a different color.
several of the dowels were not glued in place and could be raised to clean or fill the platform or tray or bowl. the birds soon learned to fly in full speed and fold their wings and land inside. frustrated the starlings and blackbirds but the little ones loved it. A huge dust devil or whirlwind came through the back yard and destroyed several feeders and tore branches from the tree. it ended up a pile of kindling across the back yard.
