Birds & Bird Feeders Vs Trees

Ah, playing Mr. Mom today now the wife's maternity leave ended.

On a Fraxinus americana (white ash) just outside the front window I hung three bird feeders to give her and the kid something to look at. One cage with a cake type mix in it the woodpeckers seem to love, one finch feeding sock, and a medium size black sunflower seed feeder. I must admit the combination is working pretty well. The bright red cardinals and the red headed woodpeckers love the frozen cake mix.

Obviously hanging anything from a branch does the branch no good. Luckily I had a low hanging branch which will eventually need cut back for mower clearance in a visible spot. EAB might just solve that problem for the whole ash tree for that matter.

More importantly, am I doing a disservice to the trees in the area by attracting woodpeckers to my yard?

Is there any type of feed I don't want to use or any one bird I should try to avoid?
