Fly Away: Decorating with Bird Cages
When I was a sophomore in high school, I went to my first ever "real" concert - Edie Brickell and the New Bohemians. At the show, I bought the coolest t-shirt - a black shirt covered with illustrated birdcages in all different bright colors. Edie Brickell drew the design herself and the result was so far from a traditional concert t-shirt. I loved it.
That shirt began my love affair with birdcages. There's something about the design of a birdcage that I can't get enough of. They're full of contraditions - open and closed, delicate and strong. They can serve numerous purposes, or just act as pretty decoration, and they work with interiors that range from totally traditional to extremely modern.

Here are some great uses of birdcages in home decor:
These reproductions of antique birdcages look great grouped on an exterior wall, though they'd also work on their own inside.
I love this birdcage lantern - the color is so summery - a perfect outdoor light.
These lamps take the shape inside in dramatic black.
A lot of the best birdcage interiors have a romantic feel. I love the way this big white cage works in the corner.
This sweet wallpaper also does a great job of showing the romantic side of the birdcage.
In contrast, THIS wallpaper showcases the distinctive silhouette of the birdcage in a mod sort of way. I love the black and white and gray, too.
These sheets blend funky design with just a little cutesiness - they'd be great for a kids' room, or a fun guest room.
The birdcage in this interior offers a great focal point, drawing the eye to the window and adding some visual interest without making the room feel cluttered.
I love this use of a birdcage as a hutch - it's functional and so pretty.
