New Hampshire 4

I haven't checked for several days, but things seem to be normal in the box I newly erected in April. Bluebirds found the new box a week or so before Memorial Day. They constructed their nest and laid four eggs. Sporadic monitoring during that time found everything to be OK: the eggs were in good shape; the nest was in good shape; and Mom and Dad were doing their job.

Last week, we saw that there were three baby Bluebirds and one yet-to-hatch egg. We haven't checked since, and are hoping that the fourth egg is now a chick.

The reason for my posting today is to ask a question. Mom and Dad Bluebird are entering the box and then flying back out...each carrying something white in their beaks. Are they carrying out broken egg shells, or what? Shouldn't the Bluebirds be coming INTO the box with stuff instead?

What's happening?

My wife, daughter & I will make a check this afternoon and I will report what we find.
