My order from New Hampshire Hosta arrived!

I planted the 4 hostas which arrived and photographed them. The photo of Cracker Crumbs didn't come out so good, so I'm omitting that one.

First, there is First Mate:

Then, there is Little Treasure:

And third, there is Maui Buttercups:

The images were taken with my cell phone, so sorry for their dubious quality. Just wanted to share my new babies with you Hostaphiles ASAP.

I noticed that the Cracker Crumbs plant (very very tiny) had little pinholes in some of the leaves, surrounded by a slightly pinkish color. That did not look good to me, so I called NH Hosta to report this. They told me that if the plant turned out to be unhealthy, they'd gladly replace it. Time will tell, the newly transplanted plants need a few days of TLC to unfurl and get settled.

I just got my First Mate that I bought on April 20 in the ground today. You'll have to give them lots of TLC in the next couple of days. You have some hot weather coming! Some of mine that I got in the mail last week were really struggling until I mulched them today.

Nice size on the Little Treasure. Your's is already bigger than mine I got this year since I lost most of it early on.

Don't you just love getting hostas in the mail!

I was told by a work colleague who has some hostas NOT to mulch, because it would attract slugs. So, I have not mulched. Instead, I water my garden frequently, when it looks like it needs it. The newly transplanted hosta, I am watering a bit every day. I hope that's the right thing to do. So far, they look good, but the little Cracker Crumbs they sent me is not the greatest specimen probably out there. If I had been choosing plants in person, I would not have chosen that particular plant. We'll see if it develops into a better plant, or if I contact NH Hosta for a replacement.

narcnh, DH and I stopped there yesterday. As borninmaine stated, they have one greenhouse dedicated to hostas, about 2/3 of that are 3-4 inch pots, and the back 1/3 are bigger (maybe 3 gallon) pots. They all looked healthy and there was a good variety. I wasn't as impressed with the shrubs and perennials. They were just OK. We didn't get a chance to look at the annuals, because it started down pouring. I will probably go back at some point, definitely if I am looking for hostas. What I didn't like, about the perennials and shrubs, was that many of them looked like last year's leftovers. I didn't speak with anyone there, besides a friendly hello from the owner (I am assuming). They seem to have a pretty good rating on Garden Watchdog, as far as orders arriving well packaged and healthy. I am not sure where in NH you are located, but if the shipping cost is close to what you would be spending in gas, I would probably go the online route. If you are going to be in the area, it is worth stopping by for a look. I hope this is helpful.

SCG I live in the Salmon Arm area as does McTavish if she ever gets posting again. She is the one that got me involved in hosta and has been quite a great ride, I must say. I got these from Hosta Choice in Appin Ontario. I have also ordered in the fall from Hosta Geek( also calles Fundy Beauties in NB) They too have great plants and I had ordered large divisions in the fall and they came up in the spring looking like 3rd yr plants. I love instant gratification at my age.

Outstanding-looking Hostas....I have an order coming (hopefully) today from New Hampshire Hostas, who, the previous 2 times I've ordered from them, have been great, but I think next season I'll have to order some from Hallson. I have heard nothing but great reviews from them, and their plants are HUGE, and look just as healthy as NHHostas' do. In fact, I'm gonna go browse Hallson's website right now!(Be strong, Don...Just browse LOL)!! Wowser! You are going to be busy! I didn't recognize any except Dinky Donna because I think I saw it on one of the other online mail order companies. I am sitting on my hands because I want to order new hostas NOW but I have too many other projects that need finished before winter and I have all my old hostas to divide and move in the spring as well as daylilies. I don't know what happened but a pot of an unidentified hosta (looks sort of like Halycon) followed me home from the markdown rack at Walmart last week?!?!?!

I'm a newbie here and certainly no expert. However, I believe that mulch not only retains moisture and helps keeps the weeds away, it also keeps the soil cool. Also, an organic mulch makes the soil more fertile as it decomposes.

I have a wooded park in back of my gardens and it's hard to control slugs. However, I put slug bait down as soon as the snow melts and continue throughout the growing season. I found my first slug today, under a patio stone, but none anywhere near my hostas that have mulch around them.

I do have a ton of hostas that are surrounded with pachysandra, I don't mulch those.

I don't have Cracker Crumbs (yet!), but the pictures of the mature ones I saw look like it will be a nice plant.
I bought a few hostas last year that I wondered what made me buy them; this year, some of them are my favorites. I don't worry about my hostas anymore in their first years. I always tell everyone that hostas are like a fine wine, they get better with age.

I don't have a big slug problem,but I always mulch my plants,for the same reason Gesila said and more. I don't like mud splashing all over my plants when it rains. It's just my opinion,you understand? Phil

For years I never used mulch and still got slugs plus the mud splashing. Now with mulch I haven't seen an increase in slugs.
