Releasing injured grackle

Ð few weeks ago I started looking after a stray female cat with two kittens. I am keeping them in a little storage room until the kittens and mother are ready for adaption. I keep the screened windows open so they are cool and they can't get out. Yesterday a grackle for some very weird reason managed to squeeze itself through the screen and into the room with these cats! I have a videocamera to monitor the cats from inside the house. I heard screaming and resqued the bird before it was killed. I have given him antibiotics. I don't see any serious wounds or blood on him. But the tail is missing and he keeps one wing down. I have no idea if he can fly or not. I'm keep him in a cage outside mounted on a tree so it want stress him by taking him inside the house. I hate to keep him caged, especially because they have babies right now. I need some advice from you rehabbers - when should I let him go and how should I check his flying abilities? He has water and soaked in water dog food. He's pretty alert, he jumps around his cage squeaking if anyone comes close.
