injured Blue jay

I noticed today there is a blue jay with one wing hanging down and he hops and walks where ever he wants to go. Eats off the ground and seems to take cover in a lilac shrub. If I could catch him I would see if I could take him where they would look after him. Any ideas how to do that

Leave him alone ... the stress of capture is enough to kill a bird.

Considering we are getting 10 to 15 cm of snow and down to minus 10 C or more he won't last. Has a hard enough time trying to walk and skip through the snow we have now. Doubt he'll make it.

how do I attract mockingbirds and blue jays to my feeders

Thanks to you both, Lazygardens and bluegirl, I believe you are both right and I will continue to enjoy the mockingbirds and blue jays from the yard. I have two hummer feeders, two little bird feeders and one large bird feeder. Ive been spoiled by having the other birds being so close to the window, they have become personal to the cats and myself, being just inches to a few feet on the other side of the window. Right now, I have daily visits from about seventy to eighty mixed birds and hummers. House finches - two females and one male came in early spring, I think they were from last year, but they were new to me, I thought they were some kind of sparrow, I did a goggle search for a red headed sparrow, it came back with pictures and the name house finch, they had seven offspring. They stay at the feeders. Titmice are my favorite. One set of parents and four youngsters have three females and one male, going by the size of the black patches on their forehead. Cardinals mom, dad and five young, three males and two females, all hatched in late spring, mom had a large brood this year, seems like they will stay together, papa and momma is always close. In the early spring we had a good number of blue birds with a pinkish chest, and a yellow finch, haven't seen the blue bird since the middle of spring, any idea where the blue bird went would be helpful. The yellow finch will show up every two or three weeks. The hummers are another story, I have no idea how many females there are from one day to the next, but there have been at least six males from time to time, since they are in a constant chase with the females, I can get a pretty accurate count on the males, I have had as many as six females outside the window at once. Hi Lorna! I don't spend much time over here, just checking out the different forums (though, I'm thinking I should, you guys have some AWESOME pictures!) I typically stay on the "gardening side." Not sure where you are Lorna, but around here (Colorado's Front Range, west of Denver) the Stellar's jays rarely come down out of the foothills and mountains, which are a few miles to the west of me. I saw a couple down here last year , but that was a BIG surprise to me! I had never seen them this low in elevation before, and they haven't been back since. I don't think they live east of the Rockies either, so, if you in that part of the country, they may not be in your area! BEAUTIFUL pictures! How do you get such fine detail and sharpness?!

Blue Jays like fruit, like black cherry, mulberry (plant a red mulberry if you go this route), blueberry, grape, and serviceberry. They like wooded edges and suburban settings. In the spring they, like most birds, raise their young on caterpillars, so plant some butterfly host plants. Native oak, birch, cherry, pine, apple, and maple trees are all good caterpillar hosts. Goldenrods, asters, eupatoriums, and wild strawberry are decent herbaceous host plants. Planting their preferred plants would be good although it wont be an instant fix, and you will also attract other larger critters interested in the fruit. All the birds enjoy sunflower seeds more than anything at my place. I mix the meal worms in with sunflower seeds but the birds dont really like them and I see them all over the ground around the feeder. Put your feeder near cover, like overhanging tree branches.

Did you try to catch him in the cold weather since may be he slowed down some? I should be asking if you've seen him period... with the low temps and all...

I don't know how to capture him except in a live trap, but I would definitely try to help him. He is very vulnerable in this condition and won't last long. I found a cardinal by the road that had probably flown into a car. I took it to a vet and they kept it overnight and said they released it the next day. True or not, I was glad I took it. I don't think the blue jay will die just because you capture it, but it will certainly die if you don't. I have rescued several birds over the years, and they all lived. One pigeon even refused to leave once it got well. I had to build a shelter for it to sleep in at night because it kept coming back in the evening. It would even ride on my shoulder.

He is doing remarkably well. Can hop skip and flutter about with one wing dragging very fast. Managed to climb up to the heated water dish and even up a poll to the suet. I put seed out for him at the side of the house ( sunflower shelled ) and he comes there and eats. Doubt I could trap him as like most blue jays he is too smart and at 75+ I would never be able to catch him. So I will just keep making sure he has plenty of food and hope he makes it.

Haven't seen the Jay for quite a long time so I presume unless his wing healed he did not make it . Mother Nature knows what's best for he creatures.
