injured Blue jay

I noticed today there is a blue jay with one wing hanging down and he hops and walks where ever he wants to go. Eats off the ground and seems to take cover in a lilac shrub. If I could catch him I would see if I could take him where they would look after him. Any ideas how to do that

Leave him alone ... the stress of capture is enough to kill a bird.

Considering we are getting 10 to 15 cm of snow and down to minus 10 C or more he won't last. Has a hard enough time trying to walk and skip through the snow we have now. Doubt he'll make it.

Hi Lorna! I don't spend much time over here, just checking out the different forums (though, I'm thinking I should, you guys have some AWESOME pictures!) I typically stay on the "gardening side." Not sure where you are Lorna, but around here (Colorado's Front Range, west of Denver) the Stellar's jays rarely come down out of the foothills and mountains, which are a few miles to the west of me. I saw a couple down here last year , but that was a BIG surprise to me! I had never seen them this low in elevation before, and they haven't been back since. I don't think they live east of the Rockies either, so, if you in that part of the country, they may not be in your area! BEAUTIFUL pictures! How do you get such fine detail and sharpness?!

Did you try to catch him in the cold weather since may be he slowed down some? I should be asking if you've seen him period... with the low temps and all...

I don't know how to capture him except in a live trap, but I would definitely try to help him. He is very vulnerable in this condition and won't last long. I found a cardinal by the road that had probably flown into a car. I took it to a vet and they kept it overnight and said they released it the next day. True or not, I was glad I took it. I don't think the blue jay will die just because you capture it, but it will certainly die if you don't. I have rescued several birds over the years, and they all lived. One pigeon even refused to leave once it got well. I had to build a shelter for it to sleep in at night because it kept coming back in the evening. It would even ride on my shoulder.

He is doing remarkably well. Can hop skip and flutter about with one wing dragging very fast. Managed to climb up to the heated water dish and even up a poll to the suet. I put seed out for him at the side of the house ( sunflower shelled ) and he comes there and eats. Doubt I could trap him as like most blue jays he is too smart and at 75+ I would never be able to catch him. So I will just keep making sure he has plenty of food and hope he makes it.

Wow! We do have some very dedicated bird lovers here on this site! Great to hear that he's around and eating where you can keep an eye on him! Bless your heart!

Haven't seen the Jay for quite a long time so I presume unless his wing healed he did not make it . Mother Nature knows what's best for he creatures.
