Dead female mallard...mate standing by

Without undue anthropomorphizing...the pair live(d) on the neighbor's pond behind us and I can't help but feel a bit sorry for "Dave." The neighbor's 9-year-old grandson named the pair Helen & Dave--go figure!-- and the kid's the one spotted the dead Helen in my front yard. We know she was only about 4 years old.

Can't tell cause of death; she is lying quite neatly on her back, all feathers unruffled aside from a few small ones lying on the grass alongside, but there is a smear of blood around her head near her beak.

Would it be better to wait until dark to bury her, take her away now, let her lie there until some scavenger disposes of her overnight...?

"Dave" allowed us to examine her with little fuss, but maintains his vigil (if you will) about 12' away. Suggestions welcome!
