I need some mealworms.

Can anyone direct me to a good source.

Yes I can! : ) go to www.sialis.org click on mealworms and go shopping. I have used Grubco but find them most expensive. I have used Sunshine and am now using Rainbow. I have been happy with all of them but Rainbow seem to be to only one shipping 10K at a time right now. Well priced and the medium worms look really good!

"Will someone please recommend a good place for ordering roses? I have ordered from Jackson & Perkins in the past, but, since they've been bought out, I'd like to use a new vendor. Thanks." I will NEVER order from J&P again. On the 28th of December I ordered 3 bareroot roses from them. On the 14th of January I called them top see where my roses were. They told me I would have them by the end of the week. The end of the week came and still no roses. I called again and they told me I'd have them at the end of January, guess what, I still don't have my roses! I'll never order from them again. Ordering off of the Internet is about convenience, there is nothing convenient about it taking a month or more to get my order.

Chamblee's! I like the small pots that they ship. They are always healthy and packaged well. Plus since they are so small, I can dig the holes and plant 10 of those babies in a day! Soaking those bareroots and digging holes large enough to hold them in is a nightmare. After a good, soaking, spring rain, I can just about dig a hole for my Chamblees' plants with 2 - 3 scoops of my shovel. I planted 10 from Chamblees in one day this Spring and didn't feel a thing in my knees or back. But I had to hire help (the teenager next door) when I ordered those bareroots from J&P. And even with his help, it still took us several days to prepare 12 holes for those bareroots. What a chore! Never again. The Chamblees roses are smaller so they do take a while longer to really take off, but that's a trade-off I'll take over back breaking hole-prep anyday. Happy Planting. Hope

Where's the best place to order Fuji Apple Tree?

Thank you both for that information. I just went to Stark Bros. website. They say Fuji must be cross-polinated with a different variety and recommended Gala, Braeburn, Golden Delish and a few others. ONly problem was, they're sold out of all the trees they recommended for cross-polination, including the golden delish, but they did have Fuji in stock. So, I went ahead and ordered one Fuji semi-dwarf. They said they will ship in a couple days so I can get it right into the ground and baby it through summer. Then next spring, when Atwood's and Lowe's have tons and tons of golden delish, I'll buy a new one of those. If the Fuji gets to be too much of a pain in the neck to take care of, I guess I could always replace it with another Delicious apple. I hope, what with them being in the front yard, that they will be far enough from cedar but at any time in the future one of my neighbors can decide to landscape with cedar in their front yards and then that'll mess me up. We'll see! We had a hard rain this morning. It overflowed my half-empty mushroom-shaped water tank AND the empty tank I just bought (on sale at Atwood's, and shaped like a barrel on it's side). We just got it hooked up to the downspout on the other side of the house. I'm amazed how much water comes down those downspouts!

During the shortage, my local supplier was out, and I too ordered from them. That week's moderate weather forecast was in our favor, so I used Priority instead. A frozen cold pack was attached at the bottom of the box, then the cloth bag containing crumpled newspaper and mealworms was attached, all in a box with very big holes. By the time they arrived, 2-3 days later, the cold pack was still damp. Healthy, very lively mealworms, every one. And a really nice, helpful staff (love that southern accent, too). Count me another very happy customer. But now I have to support my local supplier. BlueBars

Lisa- Call to check (Toll free 1-877-967-6777) but my invoice said-- 2000 lg mealworms-$15 plus ship $$2.95 for 2 day guaranteed live parcel postin a bag inside a priority box. Of the 5 deliveries-NEVER more than 2 days & our mailman brings worms to the door & rings. Seeing they are feather weight, I doubt 5000 costs any more than 2000 in a priority box. Excellent, courteous service. PS- 10,000 are $43. Al, Annapolis, Md.

I agree---Southern Insectaries is awesome!

I have ordered from Grubco twice---never again. There are actually other types of grubs in the mix which they seem to think is OK!

Ann- PS-My BB's are doing GREAT! April-20 start nest bldg---May-1 First day on eggs----April-15 Babies hatch & BOTH parents feeding Today--Both parents working their tails off feeding (natural bugs,etc-live mealies, dried mealies). They both come to feeder with my "whistle" So far- so good here in Edgewater (s. of Annapolis) Wren guard to come off in 4 or 5 days). Snake & coon guard has been up! AL

I never had luck with the whistling thing....maybe I'll try again!

Ann-Several years ago I had a baby rabbit in the yard(no bigger than 2 golf balls- so young he didn't know enough to be afraid of humans) I put some duck corn near him & always whistled the same whistle. Long story short he-she grew up full size and always came right up to me for corn(even if the neighbor was with me)! Even with snow on the ground. Al

I'm so jealous!

I think part of the problem is that I put mealworms out at night very often so they don't have to wait for me to get out of bed the next morning, so they only heard the whistle once in a while. But it'd be worth it (to me) to make them wait 1/2 hour and have them understand the whistle! I'm starting today!

My blues fledged a few days ago, and the parents are all over their preferred house. I haven't looked to see if they started building yet....but I hope for more action soon. The last nest was in a spot that I can't see easily, so I felt deprived! I blame the sparrows for that!

My male last year came with me whistling too! I don't whistle very well, but I guess it's still a consistent sound. I had let up on calling them this year, but I'm doing it again so they get more of the worms. The titmouse family likes them too.. which is ok, but they eat so many other things so leave the pricey worms to the blues!

The Titmice were so polite all winter, just taking one worm at a time, and eating it up in the tree. Now that they're feeding young, they take big mouthfuls.
