I had heard Sandhill ships late so not an option this year but I did read variety choices on their site. But, they are not shipping anymore this year. Vardaman is an early variety (90 days) and bush, so it should be good for my small area. I think I'll just put one O'Henry in just to see how it tastes. Thanks for all the suggestions. Hello all, This year I was not able to get sweet potato slips/plants from Sand Hill Preservation because they sold out. I personally do not want to order my plants in March or April when I can not plant until May. I decided I would just grow my own slips from a store bought potato. I had some nice slips growing when I found an eBay seller with a nice variety of sweet potato slips available. This seller had the Korean Purple!! FANTASTIC!!! This seller has plants ALL YEAR LONG -AND- only $1 per plant. Clean disease free plants. I only ordered a few plants - just in case. I am now a customer of these folks as long as they sell I will purchase. I know Sand Hill is a Mom & Pop operation but they do sell out pretty fast. **I am not affiliated with any merchant. I have grown sweet potatoes as a ground cover underneath pepper plants, roselle, lion's tail and something else that I no longer remember, but I know it wasn't root crops because, like Amy, I think the sweet potatoes would compete with other root crops. I like Amy's suggestion that you plant them somewhat near the onion bed---maybe on its perimeter and let the plants vine into the onion area only after the onions have been harvested. Onions do not particularly like sharing space, so letting the vines run too rampantly into the onion area might result in you getting smaller onions that you otherwise would. I think onions would be particularly unhappy about sharing space with a root crop, whereas they might not mind sharing space with a non-root crop, depending on the spacing used.
