Long time...

...hi everyone. It's been a long time since I've posted here and I wanted to apologize. There have been a lot of troubles in the family, a lot of losses, including my youngest son on Easter, so things have been very difficult....I will be out and about shooting photos of birds within the next couple of weeks or so (having cartilage repair surgery tomorrow)... MarieMom sends her love to everyone (she is here now).....we went on a hike today and saw: Turkey Vultures, Common Ravens, a Whimbrel, a Belted Kingfisher, a Common Loon, a Red-throated Loon, some American Goldfinches, a Brown headed Cowbird and lots of wildflowers.....hope everyone is well.

Hi Feather, I have wondered where you were. I am so deeply sorry for your loss. Welcome back, birdwatching can be therapeutic in a way. I will keep you in my prayers.

Hi gardengrl and welcome to NoVa! I'm also in the area (Alexandria) and just got started with wintersowing in the past couple of weeks. I started gardening a few years ago and have had good luck starting seedlings in my basement under grow lights but wintersowing sounds so miraculous that I had to try it too. So far I've done lettuce, spinach, chard, cilantro, parsley, and sweet peas. I picked things that I've had luck with in the early spring (mid-Feb and on) in past years with our normal, warmer winters. These are things that don't survive in the heat of summer so I'm hoping winter sowing gives them an early start. It's a complete experiment this year! I found a list of what to start when on the blog "A Garden for the House" from NY state and sort of figured everything here could start a bit earlier. Can't wait for warmer weather to see if my milk jugs start sprouting. This winter has been so abnormally cold that my normal winter crop of red Russian kale and arugula under hoops was killed off, so I am itching to start gardening soon and have some good salads. Totally envy your 4 acres from my little, inside the beltway yard!

I disagree with Emily_mb. In my home growing up in the '60's, we had stainless wall ovens and cooktop. Stainless has been classic for the kitchen for decades, and isn't going anywhere. She didn't specify what "first signs" she is referring to, but you can open any Architectural Digest, which typically shows $100K kitchens, and find stainless appliances. You will also see panelled appliances there, but panelling appliances is more costly. You have not mentioned a budget, which it would be helpful to this thread if you did. Anyway, things that go "out" quickly, usually have also come "in" quickly, such as avocado green appliances, which burst on the scene in the '70's, and then were gone just as quickly. Having said that, I myself have white cabinets and a mix of stainless and white appliances in my kitchen. The combination is a little more "homey" than all stainless would be. I also have my dishwasher panelled, because that appliance is the most prone to water drips down the front.

Long time lurker, first time poster, clematis newbie -- some questions

Hello.. ok, I know I'm a long way away here, and expect others more local to you will be along shortly to advise, but just thought you might like to see a couple photos of my clematis... I have 'Etoile Violette' growing with 'Minuet'... I don't have Jackmanii... to be honest, I think the flowers on that one are too similar in colour to 'Etoile Violette' to grow next to each other... I prefer a contrast... ..also, over here, and I would expect this would be the same for you, my 'EV' has a spread of about 10-12 foot width, maybe more when established after a couple seasons and fully grown, as does 'Minuet'... I have my plants spaced 6 foot apart with other plants in between... I wouldn't want them any closer as they are trained along my fence and merge and mingle with each other that way... ...when newly planted in the fall, I didn't bother putting up wire support until the Spring of the following season because these Clematis are usually cut right down before winter... to regrow afresh next Spring... ..I have wires going along my fence for them to cling to... I hope this assists you in some way...

It is very easy to feel alone. Most of the women I know are through it or went through it before me, no one really talks about it, I feel like I am having more problems than most. My mother, who is deceased, relied on pain pills and muscle relaxers, I have no intention of doing that. Like you said, some things I can eat and then all of the sudden I can't. I used to be extremely active but because of fatigue I do very little. Honestly, I feel like a shadow of who I used to be. I pray that it will gradually pass. You are not alone, I have read of others who are struggling. I don't know why some women have more problems than others. I always had very heavy periods, maybe I had a lot of estrogen, who knows. I can't do hormone replacement, my mom had breast cancer. I've tried a million kinds of supplements, my body is so sensitive that they either bother my stomach or any kind of photoestrogen makes me feel crampy like I've started something up so that's out. I can take a few supplements that I've found, just a lose dose B complex, vitamin D, calcium, and vitamin E for hot flashes. Sorry this is so long, just wanted to give you an idea of my situation.

thank you....I struggle mostly right now with the loss of my son. The healing of surgery is sort of taking a back seat. Over the years as many here know, I've had a lot of trouble with injuries to back, cartilage and tendons and have discovered that I have a connective tissue disorder. I will be seeing a rheumatolgist in June so we can discover which kind it is....meantime, I lay in bed listening to the birds calling outside. I have four hummingbird feeders up and saw the early nesting Anna's bringing a baby to them, and later, the Selasphorus hummers visited as well. Looks like we have a few stay-over Selasphorus, which with the weird weather isn't too unusual, I guess :) The Violet-green Swallows returned on schedule and the Osprey, too...there have been a lot of California Brown Pelicans flying north; adults and first-year birds. An intermediately plumaged (winter to breeding) Common Loon has been frequenting the point and bay at Laguna Point up in MacKerricher; MarieMom and I were there on Monday (day before my knee surgery) and got to watch it diving and catching fish.....a rare treat for here :o)
