Comments (11)Wow, You all know your trees :) SJN, you're right it is also known as the Mexican Bird of Paradise. :) Karyn, you're right, the Royal Poinciana is like the Big Brother of the P.O.B aka: Mexican Bird of Paradise. Here I thought I found a unique plant. ROFL :) Lucy, If I get any seeds this year I will share :). HD sold this one at $15. We've had those leftover bricks for I don't know how many years and I decide to use them this year. I was just experimenting using them around the nursery pots. But hey, if they look good I may leave them there. The pool LOL yep, it's rather hard to take pics without getting the pool in there. It's right spack in the middle. If it broke at an intersection, and you got a 'heel' on your cutting, very good. Don't cut it off. Trim the cutting from the top, leaving a couple of nodes to stick in the medium, and a couple of nodes above the surface. Leave a couple of leaves on. Make sure the medium is moist, and don't let it dry out, not even once. If it broke in the middle of a limb, trim it to about 1/4" below a node of semi ripe wood. That would be where the limb is more wood like, as opposed to the green, limber stuff at the tip of the branch. In either case, dip the bottom nodes in some rooting hormone, make a hole in the moist medium, stick the cutting in up past the second node, and pull the medium up around the cutting nice and snug. Water to settle soil, and get the air out. Set it in a shady spot, maybe in the drip line of your house or a shed. That way, condensation will drip from the roof, and keep it nicely watered. In any case, good luck! Ane let us know what happens. Janie...See MorePride of Barbados

Comments (12)Hi Xtal! Below is a thread about Pride of Barbados surviving last winter. Pink Prides are mentioned in the thread also. I've never seen a bloom on the pink ones, but from the photos they appear to be as large as the red/orange ones. There used to be a thread about them on the Florida forum, but it must have fallen off the bottom. They were not having much success with them either. I have some seeds for the pink and also for the pure yellow and cream colors that Barbra gave me so I'm going to try again next spring. Xtal, I'd suggest that you wait for the warm weather of spring to sow the seeds. I sowed seeds in the fall one year and tried to keep them going on a sunny window sill, but they all languished and finally died. They seem to want very warm soil for their roots to get going. Even the red/orange ones don't emerge until late in spring. But if someone had a very warm greenhouse and a way to provide bottom heat they might do okay. Keep us posted on how yours are doing after you sow them. I wish us all luck with them next year. They sure are pretty!
