Texas Gardening

Need a small red rose OGR or equally hardy

Kind of a specimen spot, so needs to have a pleasing shape. Hopefully fragrant. Full sun. Neglectful gardener once established ;-)

Any suggestions?

Europeana would be my suggestion. It's a beautiful rose on a nicely shaped bush. It's dark red, stays small, it's been healthy for me, a frequent bloomer, heat tolerant, mild fragrance. Check out the photos.

Europeana is a great suggestion.

Another possibility might be Martha Gonzales. While she has little/no fragrance, she's a blooming machine....and one of the easiest to propagate.

The other thing I would suggest -- equally dependable, and with most of the same virtues, is "Grandmother's Hat," which is the mid-pink you're wanting. This is, I think, 3 own-root plants in a row. Here again you have great disease-resistance, fragrance -- and oh both "Grandmother's Hat" and 'Golden Celebration' have a good vase life. The downside for "Grandmother's Hat" is that it is less-easily obtained. You might try Rogue Valley Roses or Burlington Rose Nursery -- but plants will be own-root, and thus slower to mature. (That's not an issue for me, but I know it is for some.)

I'm glad to hear that you like it. They say that it is 'very fragrant' and makes a 3.5X3.5foot bush on the site. Let me know if your mileage varies. Would also be curious as to how it compares with the more fragrant of the Austins. I've gotten a bit lazy with respect to worrying about disease or winter hardiness with the Austins as most of their more recent introductions seem fine here without winter protection (all zone 5 hardy) or spraying, as long as I don't care about a little blackspot appearing from time to time. Never seems to slow them down, so I don't worry about it. However, I don't know if these issues are more of a concern in these other roses (Heirloom/Meilland) or if they are similar. I'd been concerned about the Meilland roses being less winter-hardy, but I'm not sure if that's the case. These Heirloom ones all list as zone 5 hardy, so I assume I'd be okay. Anyway, at some point maybe best to just go for it and add a couple to the garden mix.

Lenie, I read your post and read your list of selections. I am a bit south of you, but I do grow all my roses without chemical support. I grow all the roses on your list except Eglantyne and Easy does it. From your list I would recommend the following: Charles de mills Belle amour Comte de chambord Felicite parmentier Fantin latour Tuscany superb Madame hardy Graham thomas Moinuex Pat Austin Sophy's rose Benjamin britten Belinda's dream Charles Darwin Tamora Charlotte I left all of the David Austins on your list because you indicated that you are willing to spray. I am not willing to spray. I do have a rather high tolerance for BS. There are some David Austins that seem to be doing rather well for me without spray: Sweet Juliet Alexandra Rose Comte des Champagnes Benjamin Britten Constance Spry Tess of the d'Urbevilles Teasing Georgia Queen of Sweeden Malvern Hills I'm sure there are more in the garden, but these seem to perform well enough. I would also recommend that you consider: Shailer's Provence The Bishop White Cap Darlow's Enigma Marcessa Bocella Jenny Duval Daybreak Salet I guess I could go on ad infinitum suggesting OGRs for a no spray garden. Souvenir de la Malmaison has turned out to be a good bloomer, it has blooms right now when most don't. My Just Joey was either a poor plant ($1 clearance at Fred Meyer) or planted in a bad spot because it has not grown much. I was going to buy Tamora but went to the nursery and it had such terrible thorns I ended up getting Evelyn, Heritage, and Apricot Nectar instead. I kind of wish I had gotten Tamora anyway though because I like peachy colors. I got Westerland bareroot this year but it suffered dieback in the hot spells and is very small. I planted it in the ground anyway so I hope it makes it. I may dig up Edith Schurr again as she looks like she is declining, no leaves and only 5" of stem left. My Buck rose Distant Drums is a really good rose for cutting, usually covered with blooms, and fairly long stems. I like the buff centers on magenta flowers, and the peculiar scent, but some don't- my MIL. The rosesant forum has great Buck rose photos now, especially Carefree Beauty, loaded with blooms for an extended bloom time. My Knockout rose also blooms like that, in a neglected area of the yard where it doesn't even get watered in summer.

I have a Martha Gonzales, Teri, and she is a blooming machine with little of no care.

I agree on the Martha Gonzales! I had one in my yard when I moved here 16+ years ago. It was blooming then and still is. Great no maintenance rose!

I just ran across an interesting comment by 'Bluegirl' on the Antique Rose Forum about Martha Gonzales:

"My "Martha Gonzales" (from ARE) looks like SEVERAL named Chinas. And it is quite different from a "Martha Gonzales" I had from Chamblees. ARE's plant is tall & vigorous with big, open, white-centered fragrant flowers. The Chamblee's plant was petite in growth habit & it had more delicate, folded flowers with only a light scent."

This could possibly be due to where the specimen was planted, but it might be something to consider if one is interested in acquiring 'Martha Gonzales'.

I thought of another rose that I grow which fits the bill -- Eutin. It's a wonderful, easy to grow polyantha that blooms constantly in large clusters, is very healthy, takes neglect and abuse, and stays small.

Years ago I planted one in my next door neighbors yard. New neighbors moved in and let the weeds grow up in the back fence bed where it was. Years later I noticed something red back there and it was Eutin still growing and blooming among huge weeds with no extra water and care. I dug it up and put it in a pot for her. She does take care of her plants in pots.

Sorry, Martha Gonzales has some good qualities, but I'm just not a fan. I like a more rosy looking rose. (Ducking behind my computer ... lol ... ;-)

I hope you're not getting tired of my replies, but Valentine is another suggestion. I had it in a dry location in the ground for years where it survived and bloomed, but it's doing much better in a container where I can keep it better watered. It blooms practically nonstop throughout the season. The flowers burn around the edges in the high heat of summer, but in the spring and fall they are perfect. It has the added attraction of being thornless. I never noticed much of a fragrance, but someone commented on HMF that it does. Maybe it's one of those off and on again kinds of fragrance.

Here's a picture of one of my three Valentines. I liked it so much I rooted a couple more from the one I have. It roots very easily ...

I agree with Roselee regarding Valentine. It is a remarkable rose in many ways--disease free, continual blooming, thornless, and of a moderate size. I, too, have 3 Valentines now and I plan to root a few more cuttings this fall.
