Swallows gave us a show today

I live on a lake in Orlando and a drastic tempature change brings out a misquito like midge fly in the spring and fall the swallows must be coming thru now and what a show they put on catching the midges in flight at full throttle there were hundreds of swallows and what a show on par with the Navy blue angels and no mid air collisions. They were around the last 2 days along with more birds in one weekend than I see all year. I am thankful for the swallows because the midges can be thick and make working in the garden unpleasant. I hope this is a sign that this strange winter is almost over

And please tell us rednofl.....these "swallows" would be? Purple Martins? Tree Swallows? I am also thankful for the swallows and all of the other glorious wild birds out there! ;O)

Yep, swallows are definitely on the move. We had a sky full at my usual birding grounds this past weekend. The majority were Northern Rough-winged with a nice sprinkling of Tree, Violet-green and Cliffs. Interestingly, they were joined at dusk by large numbers of bats.

And speaking of shows, while we were watching, two Harris' Hawks flew into the swirling mess and started going after the bats! They ignored the swallows, focusing entirely on the bats. One of them hit and missed a bat but knocked it out of the sky-it hit the ground a few yards away (we heard the plop, poor little guy). Shortly after we saw one of the hawks land on a pole with a bat in its clutches. Quite the finale to a great birding day.

Do you have a barn or are there barns or farms around you? Barn Swallows are alot like TRES but they nest inside barns or garages or even attics as long as they can get in and out and find a nice ledge to make their nest. I have a few pairs around that go into the barn and just sit around. I know they use mud to build their nest on a ledge. I am sure they are attracted to water much like TRES and will help keep your mosquito population down. I have never witnessed them fighting or causing trouble with any other species of bird.

carson & chipsa, I like your thinking. He didn't put a window in his MB plan or a linen closet. Jeezz I think the entry area is too large and wasted floor space don't you? I almost think he needs to start completely over. Frustrating, we waited 2 weeks to get this and I am not sure how to tell him. I think he thought this was a "good to go" plan. I found this plan today on line and so with photo shop I added his suggested garage set up, changed the kitchen to have a island, enlarged the screened in porch. I think the great room looks to be too small & MB could be set up different. Do you think this plan has a good flow for 2 adults that will have overnight guests? I want to give him feed back on the plan he sent me with a alternate plan to show him.
