Barn Swallows...do you know?

I know I have not posted in a while. Three BB nests fledged and two new nests/eggs going on now. We have had a lot of rain this season, so I haven't been out much to take any pics. Also have been trying to work on restoring my deck. But to the subject at hand: we have a pair of barn swallows that just showed up today at our house. They are presently perched (it's evening here) on our front porch, up toward the ceiling, on a wooden weather stick. Does anyone know much about them? Are they O.K. to have around? Any other tips or info?

P.S. If you haven't ever seen one of these weather sticks, they are pretty cool...and a great gift.

Do you have a barn or are there barns or farms around you? Barn Swallows are alot like TRES but they nest inside barns or garages or even attics as long as they can get in and out and find a nice ledge to make their nest. I have a few pairs around that go into the barn and just sit around. I know they use mud to build their nest on a ledge. I am sure they are attracted to water much like TRES and will help keep your mosquito population down. I have never witnessed them fighting or causing trouble with any other species of bird.

Hi Harold,

I have Barn Swallws in my barn (duh), but they also want to build under my front porch. They are beautiful birds and very animated. You will love them. I have provided a link that has nest cups for sale. I am going to order some for next season.

Thrips can sneak in anytime and they may not have come in on your new Millenia. I have used Schultz Houseplant Insect Spray with good results. The main ingredient is Pyrethrin from the Chrysanthemum flower. This may also be the basis for dog & cat flea spray which older magazines often site as being helpful. You might consider using the RID treatment: 2TB of Rid Lice Shampoo, 1 or 2 tsp Murphy Oil Soap dissolved in 32 oz spray bottle of warm water. The plant & soil should be drenched, allowed to sit about 20 minutes and then rinsed. One grower said it was 100% effective with a one time use. Thankfully, I haven't had to test this last method, but I think it would be my choice if I encounter thrips again as it is purported to do no damage to the plants. Hopefully, you will be able to get these critters under control!

You know, I actually have briefly considered it, especially lately since my neighbor's two cats both died over the last year and half, and I do have a vole problem. Old Stubby used to constantly sit in my garden and watch for voles. Can't say as he ever caught any, lol, but I liked having him on the lookout. The problem? I don't like cats! Yikes, I know I opened myself up for a lot of comments on that one, lol, but I'm sorry, I'm just not a cat person. At the farm I work at, there's a cat and that darn thing runs over to me constantly and rubs against my legs. Yuck. All I can think of is fleas, lol. No matter how many times I shake it off he/she comes back to me. Give me a dog any day! That being said, I have been thinking that a outdoor/garage cat, who I don't have to pet or really associate with might be okay, lol. I'm not ready yet, Abi, but thanks for putting the idea of a rescue cat in my mind. When and if the time comes, that's the route I'll go. That way neither the cat nor I will have to be social with each other, lol! :) Dee

I have a narrow hallway with a bathroom door that opens out. For years I have not been able to put runners/rugs in the hall because of the door. I had planned to put a pocket door in but recently was told that because of the light switch wiring it was not possible and the suggestion was made that I install a barn door which I did. I did not know that there will be a gap once the barn door was installed, the gap it’s too large to ignore. You can clearly see a person sitting on the toilet or standing at the sink, aaagh!. I tried the weatherstrip as suggested here but it did not work so then I came up with the idea of attaching “L” shaped trim. I have attached photos and it works perfectly!You have to attach the trim on both sides of the door frame and the bolts for the tracks had to be turned around so that they will not catch on the trim.

Dee, that is so very NEAT! :) I just finished building a little shed for hay for my calves and when I saw this - yes, a plan is forming! LOL I live in Wyoming and am a big football fan. I made a queen sized Wyoming Cowboy's quilt a couple of years ago and donated it to my nieces HS class for a fund raiser. I miss it! My plan is to recreate it on the back of my new shed, not many people will be able to see it but it will be good practice for something else. I also want to 'copy' Dee's idea - it would be a great addition for my front yard. Thinking about it, I will probably do that first since I wont be able to get to the shed one till Spring LOL Hope everyone has a great weekend & Happy Quilting! Marie

I snuck (sneaked?) outside and got a picture of them. There is one barn about 1/3 of a mile from here. I see barn swallows a lot in my daily travels, but never here where we live.

Hey Harold great to hear from you......You missed your Birthday greeting in April. I got one of those weather sticks for my Dad and he says they really do work. I was just tinking about you today, are you the one that had the "clubed foot" Blue babies? If you still have the pics can you put them on the thread about a handicaped Blue baby?
Oh yeah...Barn Swallows...there are lots of barns around here so I have never gotten a nesting however they come across the road and "play" with my Tree Swallows.
