I hung the 2nd type house next to a smaller & much older house that a pair of Asian sparrows were building a nest in. they immediately abandoned the old house & started moving into the new one. I'm guessing they preferred the larger size.

The metal plates you put on the front of the house around the hole should be the same size as the hole. They are protectors so the woodpeckers don't enlarge the hole, won't work properly if they are larger than the hole is. Also if you build more houses, you don't need the piece higher on the back of the bluebird house as they shouldn't be mounted on anything you would nail them to anyway. They should be mounted on a slick metal pole (conduit) with a predator baffle (stovepipe) to prevent climbing predators from getting to the nest box. Also should be put up at least 15 feet from any fence/tree or anything a predator could jump from.

Looks like good workmanship on the boxes though.

Oh and if by Asian Sparrow, you mean House Sparrows, you shouldn't allow them to nest. It is better to offer no nest boxes than to let them reproduce sine they are a non native invasive species that kills our native cavity nesting birds.

I'm aware that the metal should match the hole size. I just threw those on for the photos to show what I found. there are a lot of places selling the exact same things with a huge variance in price. these houses are well constructed. I'm a retired union carpenter & have also built & repaired stringed instruments for 35 years. not being one to sit still I'm repairing instruments, building woodenware for beekeeping, doing occasional side jobs, & now I've started on the birdhouses. funny though at a recent sale another vendor had houses with brass hinges, knobs, guards. & latches on houses built with lesser materials & workmanship & outsold me 3 to 1 because everyone was taken by the brass.
Eurasian tree sparrows were released in Lafayette park in St Louis 1870. not as aggressive as the house sparrow they are still limited to around a 40 mile radius from St Louis.

Wow so you have Eurasian Tree Sparrows nesting in your nest box? That is awesome! I only know one other person that sees them but they don't nest there. Do you have any photos of them?

I do hope your houses are mounted properly. Coons are everywhere and they or snakes can easily get to an improperly mounted nest box.

My husband makes my nest boxes. Most of mine are Gilwoods or Xboxes and he makes them the right way too!

i'll try to get some photos. I do not have a zoom lens but they are pretty tame. they were in a not as badly chewed version of this house. the entrance hole was chewed but still intact. when I put the new house next to it they immediately moved into the new. the house is 16" below a limb hanging on a chain. they should be safe. it's the house sparrows that are the main threat. house sparrows, starlings, & gray squirrels are all airgun targets.
skunks are on my hit list too. they tap on my bee hives at night & eat the bees when they come out. a friend lost 12 of 20 hives in his apiary last summer to a family of skunks.

If your nestbox gets chewed like that perhaps mounting it properly will solve the problem. A house mounted on conduit with a stovepipe baffle and put up far enough away from trees/fences would prevent a squirrel from doing this. If a squirrel can get to it so can a coon or a snake and then you have to worry about something eating the eggs/young or incubating female.

my pet bird Tiel is inside our house...sometimes in the garden, but mostly inside in one of our spare room with our pet dog.. they even use aircon and humidifiers if its really hot and dry and if they are sick, they're like a family to us. one time my tiel got sick, my daughter cried :( at night they sleep also inside the house not in the garden :) i prefer open cage.. not too close ..

I've found that not much works around here, except putting houses up on poles with baffles. It's really upsetting to be watching little baby bluebirds grow, then finding their dead bodies everywhere. Haven't figured out how to keep wrens and sparrows from doing that though.
