Got 5 Now!! But My Dad??

Hello all,

The other day it hit 71 degrees here and dang it felt great!! I was outside after work with shorts on and flip flops. No shirt and had a ball grilling a couple of steaks for my wife and I on the patio while we watched my now 5 martins and guess what..Still no female. They are buddies now but when that first female shows up that will all change grin..Pretty adult ASY women and pretty adult ASY female martins tend to do that to us guys and the male martins are no different. I think they seemed jealous of me yesterday because I had my pretty ASY Female out there with me and they all had to be alone big grin..

Anyway I now have 5 males out there but get this..My dear ol' Dad is kicking my butt!! Mr. "Martin Hog" Vincent Brown has 8 martins and three of them are female. I stopped by yesterday after work and there they were and of course he is rubbing it in smile..Well even though he is my Dad I had to say.."That's alright Dad..In about another two weeks that will all change in a hurry." I then slapped him across the back and we both smiled and I could feel the love between us." I am so proud that my Father loves his martin colony so much. The colony that I started at 11 years old with my Grandpa's help is now his pride and joy. Back then he was working all the time it seemed and I took care of it but after I got married and moved away my Father not only kept it up but he expanded it and now he is the "Martin Man" of his hometown and he loves it. He spreads the gospel of the Purple Martin around all the time and being retired he has the time to do it. I can't tell you folks how many BB Boxes he has built and just given away to folks who would love them and care for them and keep the House Sparrows out of them.

It is a wonderful thing to share the pleasure of hosting Purple Martins with your Dad,Mom,Brother,Sister,whatever..and again I thank my Grandpa so much for passing his knowledge of this wonderful bird down to me. It still links us all today in so many ways and now Me,My Dad,my brother Mark,and my brother Marty are all "Martin Men." We all share the joy and pleasure of having the majestic purple martins grace our homes all summer with their glorious presence. That is worth more than all the money in the world...but dang it..I hope I get some females soon and get one up on the old man big happy smile....Mike

I do love your Fantastic! Beautiful plants. Since you have a contained space in the planter, it shouldn't be too difficult to move your agave. I have no idea how the roots, pups will be intertwined with your other plants. But with patience I think you can do it. (You must already have patience with wee ones at home, huh?) I bought my agave at the plant show/sale at Rotary Park - probably in March? It had 8 pups in the pot and was 5 bucks! After I unpotted it, I removed the pups. Maybe I'm a wimp, but twisting them off like the guy told me was too difficult. I couldn't get any to twist off, so I used my handy sharp knife to remove them. Some had roots and a couple did not. All survived. If I were you, I'd remove the pups when you decide to move the agave. I should point out that the K. luciae will pup without flowering. It can make a nice mat of plants for you. But once it decides to bloom, even cutting off the flowers won't stop the plant's eventual decline. So you should enjoy the flowers. You will get a lot more plants to enjoy in the end. I planted 4 on an island out front. I got some pups, filling in the area, and then this year 3 decided to bloom. I will try to take a picture tomorrow. My heart aches for you. My Mom has been in nursing care for over 3 years. Didn't plan on it but things happen. There was no way I could continue to care for her, my handicapped brother and my own dd who was 9 at the time. I've watched her get worse mentally even though the issue was always physical before. She has been in a wheelchair for over 7 years and relied on it for 3 years before that to a degree. She has no hip to speak of etc. She is now convinced that I can take her home if she can walk. She has had several falls trying to get out of her chair. Many times when I visit she tries to scoot out of bed. Amazing what they can do when the desire overrides their ability. My oldest brother has been oblivious but in the last couple of months he too has been there more to see more of what actually goes on. I hear similar things like aides being unkind, not eating etc. I know she isn't being mistreated but we all know it's nothing like home. She's 86 now and I've watched the changes. She can't talk well because of a stroke like illness, she can't see because of detached retinas and she can't hear well, is incontinent, the whole nine yards. Up until about 4-6 months ago she got pleasure and peace from her prayers, saying her rosary and watching the news. Now, I don't know that she does any of that. I've rambled on but it's somewhat comforting to know that we aren't alone in our situations and whatever guilt, unhappiness or sadness we feel is normal. Still struggle with it but hopefully it makes us stronger in the end. I hope your family continues their support of you and I wish you peace. Sis

I don't know what I would have done without all of you. It is because I'm able to reach out to others who have been there that I'm able to do better for my dad. I went to see dad today and took him some of his army blankets cause he's so cold natured now. We had a good little talk and he was doing better today. He is feeling safer and better cared for in the new home. This is worth everything to me and to him for sure. Everyone I've come across is nice. Dad realizes he's in the home for good and he understands but as you say he will always want to be at home. He has a hernia in his stomach so there going to have it looked at. He's had problems for so time with it and it's gotten worse. It sure was hard to know if some of the thing's he told me about the other place was really going on or if he was trying to get me to just get him out of there and take him home or if his mind was not clear but now I'm taking some of the thing's he told me was real. Might not all be real but some thing's he's telling over and the story hasn't changed. He's asked me if I could do something about the place. Have someone look into how it's ran. He tells of how the workers yell at the residents, ignore them when they ask for something. Now I know they can't hop to everyone's needs right then and there but he said they would just smile at them and walk on by. He said they don't let them eat in peace and are hurried up. I know he's concerned about the ones left behind and if you all think I should have the AL looked into I will. My son has worked in nursing homes so he knows who to report to about abuse. You know I think dad would love to see something put together of his beloved grandmother and I can show him how I'm keeping her memory alive through us. My dad and I thank you all from the bottom of our hearts for the help.

Viola Sorry to hear of your loss. I lost my dad 10 months ago. He was 68 and I was 34. I think the same way that you are. It will be hard to go through life for the next 30-40 years without dad. My dad helped me out with watching my kids while I worked. He was such a great dad. I miss him horribly. Everything you are feeling is normal. It doesnt seem fair and at times the sorrow cuts like a knife deep inside my heart. Then I get so mad that he died. I guess all these feelings are normal. Your life will never be the same again, something just changes when you lose someone you love. When I lost my dad I felt so alone and realized wow its really time to grow up now because when mom and dad are still here, a part of you stays there little girl. There is no easy answer. Just try to keep yourself busy and cry when you need to. Talking to other people who are going through similiar thing helps me. I dont like going around people who still have there parents. I guess I am jealous, not sure,. In the end we will be reunited again. My prayers are coming your way. Keep posting
