Snow in MS!!!!

I inadvertently posted this message on the Hummingbird Forum, so please go there to read it. Dumb question...is there a way to post one message on two forums without re-typing?

Hi Donna,

How about cut & paste?

Kenn :)

How crazy is this!!??? We've had several weeks of beautiful spring like weather and BAM! We were awakened this morning to a blanket of white and it was still gently falling around 9AM...such an unfamilar sight here in the deep south! Though temps are still in the 30s, the sun is out against a brilliant blue sky and the snow is quickly melting. Weather reports yesterday did predict the cold front and a 30 to 40% chance of snow showers that we pretty much laughed off. What a delightful surprise even if it's short lived. Because I'm so camera challenged (and no sophiscated camera), I missed a stunning photo opp of the many cardinals against the glistening white! DARNIT!
Wish list for 2009??? A good camera and someone to teach me how to use it!

Well, I just went outside and there's barely any evidence that it snowed and temps are creeping up. No building snowmen or snowball fights...OK, my "way up north" friends..go ahead and laugh!

We're bracing for the snow here in eastern central Jersey. Snow is suppose to start tonight through tomorrow, could get 8-12 inches, but we'll see. I made sure I filled all the bird feeders.

Here are some shrubs for shade from IL extension. They are probably zone 5 so you might want to double check the hardiness of the shrubs listed. Also check on the soil ph. I imagine you have basic soil, so no acid loving plants like mountain laurel, but that is just a guess. http://urbanext.illinois.edu/ShrubSelector/sort.cfm?fn=Exposure&subfn=4 With that lovely house, I can just imagine a few annabelle hydrangeas out front. Last year I planted an annabelle hydrangea behind paprika yarrow and I loved the combo. Then off to the side I had chocolate eupatorium, white obedience plant and variegated lysimachia. One of my better summer arrangements so far. I would buy a couple bags of topsoil and establish a small 'nursery bed' off to the side. Buy (or trade or beg :) from other gardeners) small perennials as you can and nurse them along in the nursery bed. Let them grow to the point where you get a few divisions. Then when you are able to improve the soil and establish beds you will have clumps to divide and make a bigger impact. Also, I would start digging kitchen compost waste directly into the ground in areas where you want beds to eventually be. If you aren't ready to buy a lot of soil amendments, this is an easy way to slowly build up your soil. Also, nab neighbors leaves in the fall and mulch the site of future beds.

Oh, Ms. Luna, I'm so glad I am not the only one to talk to their car. I have named mine Miss Margaret, but call her Miss Maggie when she's in a spunky mood (in short galloping down the road rather than ambling and yes, I pat mine on the dash board when we make it through a tough spot or keep encouraging her with "You can make it, come on girl." I've always said that machines truly have minds of their own with a little mischief thrown in for good measure. Glad you made it home safe and sound. Please give "Bess" an ATTA GIRL for me. Kirk, hope you guys are beginning to thaw out up in the northwest. Loved the plate flowers on the other posting. When my 87 year old Dad walked by and saw your pictures he was impressed with what you had done. Think Spring!! It will be here soon (despite the groundhog prediction). Toodles, Ms. Faith

You are right, it is an awfully tight spot. I am not sure why it was planted there except maybe they thought it would be "bushy" on top and stay bushy under the roof edge. It is not my favorite location. I do not know how long it has been there but I know it has been at least 5 years since I moved in and it was there then. The roots of the shrubbery in general are just knots so i doubt it would transplant well if I was able to "cut" it out of that location. That green tie is a rubbery plastic tie that keeps the top heavy shrub from almost laying down on top of the hollies below.

Pruning to achieve a ‘trunk heavy’ magnolia

You of course can do whatever you like but I can't see how pruning the shrub in the photo into a single trunked specimen is going to provide the look you are going for. You wll be removing 75% of the plant to reduce to a single stem and it will takes years for it to regain a full, rounded canopy.....if ever. Not to mention that full flowering feature embo referred to. Some shrubs/trees lend themselves to this sort of approach.....others do not. It has nothing to do with 'bastardiztion' and everything to do with how the plant wants or is inclined to grow And a 5' tall magnolia of this type is far too big and mature to start attempting to train into a standard (tree-like) form. That is something that is undertaken beginning when the tree/shrub is in the seedling stage or while still quite young and immature. ETA: writing/posting at the same time as embothrium but agree fully with his assessment. Sorry.

Kenn, thank you so much! I have yet to master the cut and paste, but I'll work on it.
