How do you all like to prune or not prune your tomatoes? Do you like to let them bush out on there own or do you prefer to keep them to one or only a few stalks?

This was only my second year growing. Last year a let them bush out and I got a good amount of tomatoes until the plants were a jungle. I had problems with pests. This year I tried to keep them to one or two stalks. They grew like crazy, some reaching 8 to 9 feet, but they didn't produce that many tomatoes.

I cannot blame the pruning techniques for my low yield, because this year I also planted in the ground instead of in containers. The soil I planted in had it own list of problems, VERY poor drainage, probably not enough organic matter, etc. I am learning a lot with every season, and I have a new game plan for the garden plot ( raised boxes.. at least 2' tall)

So, I would like to test pruned versus un-pruned, when I get my soil conditions right. I was just curious to see what you guys had to say about your pruning habits.

Question for you is: How is the taste of the tomatoes between the two techniques? I've heard pruning focuses the plants energies into the few tomatoes it has to produce tomatoes of exceptional quality. This year I pruned moderately and I think I am going to regret that decision. I have a few 20

Yep, that is the price one pays for pruning their plants.

You'll find literally hundreds of discussions here, and even a FAQ, about the pros and cons of pruning. I linked a few of them below. You'll find, I think, that most of us don't subscribe to pruning in general and that the need for it, or lack there of, all depends on the method of support you use.

Personally, I use 5 and 6' CRW cages and only remove any branches below the first truss of fruit, branches that touch the ground.

PS: oh, and so-called "suckers" (secondary stems) do NOT drain or suck energy from the plants regardless of what you might read. That is old folklore. ;)

It did, it was just a standard norway spruce - at least that's what the tag said. Like a 4-5' b-and-b. It flushed out a lot of growth last year and survived our bad drought with a lot of manual watering. It did have a lot of excess roots that had 'escaped' the burlap and was quite a nest of roots. In hindsight I probably should have cut them back to avoid a risk of girdling, but I ended up shaking out the wood chips and really watering it in well. Hopefully that doesn't come back to bite me. You think those hard brownish 'lumps' may end up shooting too? Yeah I'm in no rush... I'll at least wait until the other one I have shoots and see what happens.

Olivia can get up to 6+ feet in 2-3 years in California and elsewhere with mild winter. Unlike in the UK, it is definietely not a rose that stays within the 4 feet tall range. In fact most David Austin roses that said 4 feet in height in their catelog will get to at least 5 - 6 feet unless you live in areas with issues of winter die back, in zone 5 - 6. My Olivia got up to 6 feet after 2 years even with extensive summer pruning. It does throw octopus canes. During its first year it reached 4 feet. It is in the back of the my rose bed. You can safely prune those long canes for Olivia. It won't mind at all. After all it is not a once blooming old garden rose which you dont' want to prune at this point of the year. However, if you wish to have rose bushes that stay around 3 - 4 feet with rouind shape, most Austins are not in that category. The exceptions are Munstead Wood and Boscobel, which I managed to keep around 3&1/2 feet tall. Agree with threelittlelights13 that planting in groups may help in the look. My garden is semi-gormal with a lot of boxwood which were planted 1&1/2 feet apart - now all grown together. and helped to create a more formal look. I am not sure that's what you are looking for, and perhaps you just want a neater looking garden. Nevertheless, I included a few photos below. Those in the fronts are Boscobel and Bolero which does stay wtihin 4 feet with pruning. The yellow is Julia Child which actually reached 5 feet in the spring.

I just chopped off half the growth of a 1-meter tall Mexicola Grande because it wasn't branching. I did the same thing six weeks ago to a Fuerte of the same height, and it is exploding with branches all over the place. I read a research article yesterday that was comparing top-pruning 8-year-old Hass and Fuerte trees at 4 meters and 6 meters, and the 6 meter height gave much better yields over several years. Another research article was talking about selective pruning of fruiting branches in the spring to reduce the fruit load so that you can get a fruit load on alternating years. The research has convinced me to do that eventually to my Fuerte, which is famous for needing rest years. You don't prune the whole branch, but choose several main fruiting branches per year and cut the flowering tips off of the others. The next year, you prune the previous year's fruiting branches to stimulate production of new growth, which is where the flowering for the next season will occur. You have to do this in the spring to give the tree time to establish new growth to the maturity necessary for it to differentiate into fruit wood. If you want a branch to grow straight up, you could try tying up an existing branch to a wood chopstick. Poke the chopstick into the dirt gently to avoid destroying a lot of roots. It may take a year or more, IME, for the tied up branch to get the idea or it may flop over again anyway. IME, after feeding lightly with a weak liquid fertilizer, it takes three or four weeks to see new growth the size of a small match head.

My support system is sort of lame - 1 six foot hardwood stake per plant. It's not really sufficient, but I like the way it looks, and my garden is right in my line of site all the time so I am unwilling to do something ugly. (I know, I'm not very hardcore!)

So I have to prune or else everything would be tipped over by now (more than it is). Each one of my 20 plants has only 2 or 3 main stems, which I achieved by removing lots of suckers.

The result has been that they are very tall and don't have tons of tomatoes on them. But that's sort of what I was going for. My family of four couldn't eat the fruit of 20 plants if they were unpruned - just too many. I am trying to figure out what varieties are ones that we like, so getting five fruit from each plant would be sort of perfect for us.

The exceptions are Opalka, which has 12 tomatoes on it so far, and Gigantesque which has 7. The rest have on average 4 or 5 (though there are some that have only 1 or zero - lots of variability). Since we have a short season here, the plants have only been in the ground for 7 weeks, so nothing is blushing yet, but I'm hopeful that will start soon.

If we could find varieties that were the "winners" for our family, I think I might grow them in future years and not prune them, give them special supports and then hope they would produce lots of fruit.
