bird in the house

Help. I have a bluebird trapped in my fireplace. He has come down the stovepipe. He is up on the shelf/baffle thing and just peers at me but I can't get hold of him. Should I leave the glass door open and let him come into the room? I'm afraid he'll panic and fly up to the top of the cathedral ceiling. Can I use some kind of bait to lure him into a box or something?

I would open it. He will probably fly into a window tho. I had this happen with a female. Have a towel ready so you can throw it over him to catch him and take him out and let him go providing he is not stunned. In that case I would put him in a dark box with the lid closed until he starts hopping around and then release him. This is what I do for all bad window strikes and I've only ever lost one bird.

I agree, try to get him in your room. I have Cathedral celings too. The bird will tire and eventualy come down. Put out a water source and a nice dish of meal worms. Leave a light on at night so he can see them when the house is quiet to sustain him. He will weaken and you will get him. I think hes a goner if he cant get out of the pipe. He may be too weak to get out of it. Find a nice light pillow case or towel to throw over him and as Cathy says either let him rest in a dark bag/box or let him lose if it is daylight. Are you sure there is NOT a nest up there? Can you get a mirror to be sure? Dont want to mess with him if he is tending a nest and he realy CAN get out.

I collect these, too. You will find nice, handmade ones on ebay if you do a search for "primitive birdhouse." They are not cheap (and I have not asked any if they will barter) but they are sturdy and lovely! Best to you and yours, Diane

Hello... I just wanted to say that I bought a birdhouse last year called 'Country Nests'. It is very decorative and has windows and door designs on the outside etc. It is placed on the top of an arbor that has vines climbing the sides. It is a functioning birdhouse, with access to clean it out and the correct size hole for a chickadee. This spring we were delighted to see the chickadee take up residence and right now we have been seeing a couple making repeated trips back and forth to the house. So far there doesn't seem to be a problem at all. We are also planning on planting a thorny climbing rose on the arbor so that may also add to it's security. Right now, I say those chickadees have the best roost in the neighborhood. I can't imagine how great it is to be living in the middle of a Honeysuckle vine in bloom. :-)

Do the solar lanterns give out any heat at all? Maybe there's also a little greenhouse effect with all of the glass to make the nest toasty warm, although I see you're in Phoenix and maybe more warmth isn't as desirable as it would be here in MA. Claire

In winter, birds love to eat the holly berries, so if you don't appreciate the birds, maybe you could take out the holly bushes this Spring. They're landing on the roof waiting for their turn at the holly bushes. Conversely, I plan to purchase as many holly berry bushes as I can, to attract as many birds to my yard as I can. I can't imagine life without birds. The poop should be easy to remove with a hose.

My gramma raised canaries. Occasionally one escaped while cages were being cleaned. Eventually, the bird will tire and land on the floor, hopefully in a corner. Gently toss a small towel (like a dish towel) over the bird, and they cannot fly. Gently pick up the bird, wrapping the towel loosely around it, being very careful not to crush any feathers. Once you have the bird secured, it should be easy to release outdoors. Best of luck!
