Planting just before a flood....

I've been trying to limit putting in new plants due to our current drought, which is hard given that I started with a field of weeds. So I have put a few things in the ground recently and had planned to put a handful of more plants (native/drought tolerant stuff) in the corner I previously asked about.

While no one can truly predict the future, all the talk is of how we're going to get hit with El Nino flooding come Sept/October. While our house is not at risk of flooding, our clay soil does make our yard become a little lake (or at least have lots of ponds...) if we have a lot of rain, like in 2007.

My question then is will my new plantings, say 1-3 months in the ground be very fragile and highly susceptible to rot/damage if we get too much rain soon? Should I just hold off on any thing until after this winter? It's very hard to stop myself from planting ;)

Of course, this talk of El Nino rains may all be wishful thinking....
