The van ert trap is state of the art stuff no one with bluebirds should be with

out at least one trap they are very cheap and can be used in most standard

box's go to there web page order today you will not be sorry. Nest removal

is not enough and will only force the male bull sparrow to kill if you kill his chicks Once you remove his nest he will go to the bluebird/Martin nest and kill

is a absolute must to remove the male once the male HOSP is gone then and then only do you remove the sparrow nest........studies have shown this....

If you leave the sparrow pair alone they will only call in others to gang up

on the naive birds. You must remove them

I agree the Van Ert trap is the best way if you can not shoot the HOSP. OH I wish this did not have to hapen...but it does. Sobbing.

I have just bought a Van Ert, and I really love it. I own a repeating sparrow ground trap, and I didn't have much luck capturing the HOSPs with it. I looked out one day, and it contained a Starling, a female Cardinal, and a Song Sparrow, and that Starling was pecking the female Cardinal horribly. Had to stick my hand inside that trap with that nasty vicious Starling and rescue her and the Song Sparrow. Did not enjoy that ONE single bit. YAY for Floyd Van Ert! ~~Angie

Thank you for the warm welcome. I like to think that I have some knowledge lol. I have links to pictures of my backyard and my neighbors backyard. What do you guys think? I circled the boxes in red in both my yard and my neighbors. My neighbor has 2 of my boxes in her yard and 2 purple martin houses which she plans moving out into the open more. I have not seen any house wrens but I do expect to see some in the next month or so. I haven't seen any TRES here at all yet. Okay, I made everything ready, chased sparrows, trapped sparrows, and all was quiet in the yard. I saw one bluebird scouting out the area a day or two ago, no nest has been started. This morning from my window, I observe something I have not seen before-- a blue chasing a robin, and the robin coming back pretty aggressively. Is this common? Anthing to do about it? I have 2 sources of water, no feeders. Just curious.

Rachel, A quick pull on their neck and they are done for. House Sparrows do not belong here at all and they are not humane at all when they raid the nest box of a pair of Bluebirds. They grab the skull of the female most often as she tries to defend her nest inside the cavity. Then they slowly pinch and pinch until the female Bluebird is dead. I have even see where they have built their nest over the dead body of the female Bluebird and her eggs. Because of this I feel no pity at all for them and no it is not their fault they are here but that is no reason to tolerate them in any fashion. Once you trap and destroy these no good birds for a few seasons you start noticing how many more native American birds are starting to show up at your feeders and that is a wonderful thing. Getting rid of House Sparrows and Starlings helps all native birds not just the bluebird and because of my trapping and killing them native birds of all kinds are very common here...Mike

Sounds and looks like a neat place. I have never been birding outside the United States but that looks neat. Thanks for the tip. I wonder if there are starlings there?? Probably darn it grin..suckers have spread all over the globe now it seems except like maybe Antarctica or the far north. I wish they would all go there from the United States anyway and maybe freeze solid before they realized they went too far south. My trap had another one in it this very morning and it was great to see him behind bars as I sipped my morning coffee while watching my now 20 martins all over the gourds smile...Mike

I also agree that the Van Ert trap is an absolutely vital tool to use. It is so easy too. I put the screws in every nest box I use and just slide it in whenever a HOSP claims a box.

I agree after a hosp claimed my bb box this spring I installed a van ert trap yesterday and trapped the male this morning and quickly dispatched him. I haven't seen the female and I did notice the bb back and inspecting it this later in the morning so I removed the trap lest they be trapped. I will remove the box altogether for a week or so if I see hosp in the area again. I don't think the bb are nesting in our area yet, just the hosp who build nests a few weeks before the bb.
