growing cantaloupes on trellis

My cantaloupes on trellises exceeded my expectations. I mad an abundant amount of 6 to 9 pound Sugar Queen melons. I guess the hot weather finally put a stop to them as they just quit blooming and the fruit would not grow. With temps in the triple digits as long as they were this year I can understand why. I had approximately 50 plants and produced approx 150 nice melons. I definitely will increase number of plants next spring but wil probably put them in nearer to April 1

My Crispy Critte watermelons did not produce as much as I had hoped but i think my pruning method was a partial reason;'

I had no idea cantaloupes would grow on a trellis. or at least that the fruit wouldn't just fall off the trellis from their weight.
I might have to give that a try. wonder if it would work for watermelons :)

We have 5 ambrosias on a trellis and they are still producing in San antonio. We sling the fruit when they get bigger with the red netting that onions, cuties (and mr. Freeze pops) come in. My husband insists on slinging the fruit, although I don't think they are big enough that it is necessary. This was our first year growing cantaloupes and it has been a huge success. In fact, they have been the only success in our garden this year.

Watermelon didn't take off, but we will try again next year.

Hi, mea. For the melons, each 5-gal. bucket has a large hole in the bottom through which the roots can grow down into the soil below, sort of like a raised bed. Theoretically it will work along the principles of square foot gardening -- "intense" spacing but with much attention paid to ensuring sufficient nutrients and moisture. The recommended space is one square foot per melon plant. Anyway, I'll report back on them after the season is finished. The rest of the veggies that need support are tomatoes in self-watering grow-buckets.

just be careful, I trellised cantaloupes last year, and the problem wasnt supporting the weight of the melons so much as is was that the melons would pull the vines causing them to kink and cut where they rested on the trellis... so, just watch closely how you support them and make sure the vines aren't being bent, pinched, cut, etc.. by the weight... the melons held on just fine though

Army: 1st year with cantaloupes so I guess I'll find out if PM attacks them like they do my cukes and squashes. But, there are several organic remedies for PM -- wettable sulfur, a baking soda solution, and a milk solution to name a few. Google for recipes. Definitely spot test for the sulfur though and do nor use with Horticultural oils. Also... what I have learned is that in order for ANY remedy to work on PM is to treat PRIOR to symptoms showing. This leads my reasoning to --- when you normally start seeing PM show up each year, start treating BEFORE that time of year. For me, that's about a month from now. We'll see if that theory holds up. ive used old tennis nets pantyhose cheesecloth and some decorative netting to sling the fruit/. i do not sling until fruit almost or fullyg grown. they will not fall until they start to slip(turn loose at point of stem and fruit contact) i have read that is called 1/4,1/2 3/4 slip full slip the fruit is free from the vine i did have some crispy critter watermelons and i did not need to sling them they are a one serving personal melon i did not have very high production with them but they were great. btw i plant sugarqueen cantalopes they grow to a size of at least 6 pounds and everyone raves about there sweetness, flavor and then rind if you have any questions contact me a johnwm21@verizon.net
