Hm...this guy should have been south long time ago, I prefer sunflower
and thistle seed, I'm sure, they eat other seeds to, [they love to feed from the ground] you can try but I don't think it's necessary. Have you got a picture of this lost fellow?

i get what they call hen scratch or chicken scratch at the local feed store. It's a mix of cracked corn and wheat berrys and milo. I have several old aluminum baking sheets
that i keep on the back porch. I place a baking sheet under a tree on top of the snow and the juncos and doves have a place to eat thats not buried in snow. the chicken scratch is a mix for feeding chickens but my juncos and doves and some other birds eat in very well and i can alternate pans if needed. it's cheap compared to other stuff and sells from $7.00 to $9.00 for a 50 lb bag. I keep it in a plastic garbage can with snap lid on the porch.

Thanks. I will spread some feed on the ground as this poor little thing won't eat with the others and sort of stays to the side or waits till the rest are gone. Will try and get a picture. It's very timid.

Be careful of putting anything metal out that their little feet will freeze to!

i have never had any problems with the aluminun baking sheets or an aluminun pan that i put sunflower seeds or nuts in for the chickades on my window sill. i use them all winter. It was below zero at night a lot last week and single digets this week and the juncos and doves have been here everyday eating from the pans

We have whole flocks of juncos, chickadees, finches, pine siskins, purple finches, plus sparrows, several varieties of woodpeckers, cardinals, jays, mourning doves, a pair of Carolina wrens (with sharp attitudes and beaks to match, lol), a couple of mockingbirds after raisins and suet, lots of titmice, nuthatches and plenty of robins at the birdbath water. There are also a few bluebirds in the yard getting drinks out of the pond tho they haven't visited any of the feeders. I don't have any mealworms for them, I don't know what they are eating. I feed lots of black oil sunflower, two feeders of thistle and some scratch feed for the ground feeders (doves, sparrows, and other seed eaters). They are going thru 20 lbs of seed in about 4 days.

Lovely....you have Common Redpolls already, I usually get them just around this time but haven't shown up.

Lots of Juncos here in West Michigan, we are as cold as 8 degrees this week. The Juncos like the thistle here and are always under the suet block grabbing what has dropped.

Have had lots of Dark eyed Juncos ground feeding beneath my North Georgia feeders lately. They are eating BOSS. Seems like the ONLY time I see them is when it is snowing or about to snow.

Most of the Junco in my areas feed on the thistle seed that fall from the sock. I often have a tray with thistle seed too. I use to use millet, but squirrel then hang around the feeder.

Sadly, they used to be really common in my yard (like a whole flock). This year, I only see 2 or 3 at a time.

He finally came back and if he lived thru this last week he will be OK. Starting to mix with the Redpolls. Before he just sat at the edges and grabbed what was left. This is so much better
