ID Request - pic from last May

I was just organizing some photos I took last year and I found this picture of an unknown bird on a tube feeder in my yard. This was taken in Plymouth, MA on May 24, 2013.

I had some car problems on that day and I may have just snapped the photo and forgotten about it while I went off to the repair shop. I have no other view of the bird - just two nearly identical back views. Can anyone identify the bird?

Really? The tail looks much darker and longer than in this pic of a male and female House Finch I took in December.

The tail is what confused me - maybe an artifact of the lighting?

Anyway, thanks, BN, I'll take your word for it.

Nice group you have there, Andrew! The unknown tagalong is a Kalanchoe (previously Bryophyllum). Somewhat young to tell species, but could be delagoensis or x houghtonii. You might want to keep it separate from your other succulents as it grows or the plantlets from its leaf edges will drop in pots (or the ground), growing in unwanted spots. If your Pleiospilos spent bloom is mushy, it's most likely not going to make seeds. I'd remove it...also checking the soil, see if too wet. Do you keep all your plants in the house? If so, near a sunny window? They seem to be happy with the care you're giving them. :)

I don't know much about mushrooms, except that the ones you have are caused by overly-wet soil. Your veggies are in plastic containers - you may need to drill some extra drainage holes near the bottom. Do not water so often - wait until the soil dries out a bit first. Also, is that wood mulch? You should not use wood chip mulch on veggie beds - it is too acidic for veggies; try straw (not hay) instead. I assume you want to harvest veggies, so I suggest removing the mushrooms and not water until the soil feels dry (or the plants start to wilt). If the mushrooms come back you are definitely over-watering and your veggies will probably die.

Yes, its definitely schiedeana. That is one columnea that is easy to ID. I know of no other columnea that comes even close, not even schiedeana hybrids, of which there are quite a few. It has been in cultivation for a long time, and will grow into a very large plant, but can be kept smaller with pruning. It flowers all year long, more or less, and is one of the easiest to grow. It is wide spread at higher elevations in Mexico, so can handle cold dips down to 32, if they are for a short time in the early morning. There are three or four different collections in cultivation. I am pretty sure that you have the common Mexican form. There is a large grower from Costa Rica, that has wonderfully spotted flowers, but is a coarser grower, plus one from Mexico that has all yellow flowers, and somewhere, hopefully still in cultivation, is one that has red backed leaves. When the GRF went on a collecting trip to Mexico they found one that had all red leaves. I saw a photo of it--it was outstanding; but, sadly, it never made it into cultivation (that's the one I really want!). I like schiedeana a lot, and have been growing it for many years. When I grow it outdoors, the hummingbirds will set berries for me, which are white. Jon

ID request. A mass produced Daylily from the 1980’s and 90’s

I see these orange daylilies around all over the place here in June ( zone 7). In landscaping, in older homes, around subdivision entrances; they are everywhere. The scapes are held well above the foliage and the orange flowers are abundant. I actually like them. After years of wondering I asked about them on this forum and came up with a species name I suspect is what they are: Hemerocallis (latin for daylily) Fulva. Their common name around here doesn't do them justice I don't think. They are called Ditch Lillies. Here's a picture of ones I took that were in a neighbors front yard (among many front yards): Yours appears more red, but that could be the difference in time of day and our heat, which fades many colors later into the day. There are only two red finches that would be expected in May in MA, those are House and Purple. The length of the tail, wing color, and head color do not fit Purple. Also, in May, feathers are becoming quite worn as you can see in the pic. The secondary, primaries and tail feathers (retrices) are all showing signs of wear. That, and the lighting of the photo, could make the tail look darker than you are used to seeing.

Thanks, BN, for the explanation. It does make sense, and I see House Finches fairly often here, mostly in the winter. I can see the House Finch in the body and head, it was just the tail that looked wrong, but worn feathers are reasonable.

I just found this photo of half of a male House Finch from May 22, 2012, and the tail also looks darkish and long.

I rarely see Purple Finches but I found an old photo from Jan. 4, 2009 of what I think was a male Purple Finch with a similar back view.

The color is definitely in the raspberry range.

Sometimes there are advantages to keeping way too many photos on your computer.

Thanks again - that mystery photo was really annoying me.

Claire..........that IS a long dark tail! That would have confused me too. I suppose it could just be a curious variation.
