Placement of finch sock

I bought a finch sock to place on the deck where the hummers feed in the summer. We miss our feathered friends in the winter. But so far, no luck. Not a single bird. Can anyone tell me if this is too close to the house? Or if there's a trick to letting the birds know it's there? Where it's placed, it does hang just around the railing level.

birds often take several weeks to find and use a new feeder.
a lot of different birds seem to be attracked by bright colors and fluttering objects. Try hanging a few ribbons or ballons or even a couple wind chimes out. If there are any chickadees around your area they will probably be the first to show up. they are very curuous and one of the most friendly of birds. When i go out to fill the feeders or cleanup i whistle and chirp and they come flying in to see what is happening. another thing that attracks birds is water.anything from a bowl or pan changed daily if it freezes up or anymore the heated bird baths are a lot cheaper and can be placed on a railing or even hung from a rafter or mounted on a pole. and they are pretty energy efficient i hang my feeders close to a tree or shurbs it seems the birds fly into the tree or bushes first then to the feeders or water. and mine seem to do best 5 or 6 foot from the ground. my water bath came with a clamp to mount from railing or a 3 foot pole to sit in on in the yard. it sits outside the kitchen window close to the feeders.

I also use the socks which are used almost exclusively by goldfinches this year (last year the pine siskins were all over). There's a lot of spillover, which makes juncos and other sparrows very happy. Not to mention the mourning doves, and the turkeys. Turkeys were a big problem when one sock dangled down within reach - the turkeys discovered they could peck a hole in the sock and empty it down to the ground, where they sucked it all up. As for your original question "How much does a single bird eat in a day any way?", I don't know the answer, but I had 18 goldfinches on the socks this morning and they have been diligently working at lowering the levels. Best finch feeder?

That is quite the finch feeder you have the link to! It looks great. The only problem I had with a sock feeder was rain. I felt I couldn't leave the seed there, too much chance of it rotting. I swear by the two finch feeders I have: both made by the "Perky Pet" company. One is a plain plastic finch feeder with the tiny portals, and regular perches; the other is one made specially for goldfinches, on which they have to hang upside down. Only goldfinches have ever used their feeder, and the goldfinches also love the other feeder. Our house finches usually prefer black sunflower in the regular tube feeder we have, but I've seen them on the finch feeder too. I have seen chickadees enjoying the regular finch feeder. The house sparrows don't bother it though. One note: I have read that if you shorten the perches on a finch feeder it makes it more difficult for other birds to use those perches.
