Oh, it sure is, Tony! Aren't they just the cutest things? I love them! We have titmice here all year, but they come and go at the feeder. I often have loads of them daily for several weeks and then they are off somewhere else for awhile. Then one day, they are back again. I think it just depends on where they are feeding at the time. They often have an endearing habit of grabbing one seed at a time and taking it to a low branch to crack it open. Since their beaks don't crack sunflower seeds like a cardinal can, they hold them between their feet and hammer away at them. And Tony, when they are around, keep an eye out for Carolina chickadees. One or two will often travel with the titmice. Goldfinches could show up any time, but for me, I start noticing them later into the fall, normally. Marcia

Put out a little birdbath/saucer of water near your feeder. I have a terracotta one that has chains to hang it and a shepherds hook under my trees in the perennial bed. No other feeders though...I seldom feed in the summer because my garden is designed to feed the birds and food for them is plentiful in it. The Goldfinches LOVE to cling to the chain and dip their little beaks into the water to drink! Also, sometimes when natural food is quite plentiful, or during brooding season you see reduced populations at feeders. Robin

I also use the socks which are used almost exclusively by goldfinches this year (last year the pine siskins were all over). There's a lot of spillover, which makes juncos and other sparrows very happy. Not to mention the mourning doves, and the turkeys. Turkeys were a big problem when one sock dangled down within reach - the turkeys discovered they could peck a hole in the sock and empty it down to the ground, where they sucked it all up. As for your original question "How much does a single bird eat in a day any way?", I don't know the answer, but I had 18 goldfinches on the socks this morning and they have been diligently working at lowering the levels. Can you put screens on the vents so the goldfinches can't get in? I'm surprised the hot air coming from the vents doesn't keep them away. We have screens on our dryer vent to keep mice out
