Among the harder to find woodland sedges, I have Carex communis, Carex hitchcockiana, Carex albursina, Carex hirtifolia, and Carex pedunculata. I also have a lot of other woodland sedges more often found in the trade (e.g. Carex blanda, Carex muskingumensis, Carex eburnea, Carex pensylvanica). I am a botanist that does site assessments for a living, and these are either propagated from SE WI seed or plants rescued from sites being develped (division and/or seed). I don't have a lot of time now to deal with exchanges, but if someone out there has Trillium nivale, Trillium cernuum, Trillium flexipes, Dichanthelium latifolium, or Asclepias amplexaulis (seed) that are sourced responsibly...divided from their own garden/property or of garden origen, or in the case of the milkweed, seed collected legally or with permission...I'd be very interested in a trade.

There are two common types of sedge problems in lawns. Most common is nutgrass or nutsedge. It is a water loving plant that's been seen growing on flood prone islands in rivers. Once the soil dries out, though, it can go away until the soil conditions become favorable again. People who water daily will complain about it while people who water weekly rarely have a problem. The second common sedge is green kyllinga. GK and nutgrass look alike until they flower. GK has the ability to absolutely thrive during a drought. It is so beaten up by winter, nailing down a specific cultivar could be tough. And there are many variegated forms to boot! But the species is most likely to be either C. morrowii or C. oshimensis. If it looks like it as a spreading habit - most carexes do not - then it could be Carex morrowii 'Ice Dance'.

Thanks, kitasei2. What is your climate situation? I got kind of hopeful I might have a spot for them, since I could get them locally & manage the planting time. Would be able to put in a group. The pros& cons of experimenting with single plants of different types here and there ( something for fun, something for shade) is yes, I can trial something before a bigger investment, but, the watering through the first summer or 2! Getting one thing established and then adding more that then needs to establish— I’m trying to do more planting of specific areas so can water in everything in that zone.
