In my opinion Sedge Peat, aka Michigan Peat, is perhaps the worst stuff you can associate with bonsai. It is not peat it is decomposed marsh grasses. When dry it resists water worse than Peat Moss, becomes very hard and compacted. Its normal structure is very fine and not generally conducive to bonsai propagation. I am not speaking form hear say, I am speaking from a time in my soil making career when I actually tried it. I do know some people like it, or so I have been told. Haha, wish I knew--the chapter doesn't name the church, unfortunately. But see, grass won't grow in some places, I have a shady property. Under some of my trees my choice is either bare soil/mulch or something non-grass. Baltimore sedge likes the shade, unlike grass -- therefore my interest in trying it out. Green sedge seems preferable to brown mud. Another option is to plant a groundcover, but not much will grow under trees with a heavy shade, and I'm looking for other options besides liriope and pachysandra terminalis. Christmas ferns would grow there, and I planted some a couple years ago -- but the scourge of the ignorant lawn guys who don't know squat weed-whacked them out of existence. What's your grudge against sedge? I have some very handsome ornamental ones. Not suitable as a grass substitutes, these ones, however.

I can't tell all that well from the picture, but it looks a lot more like Bottlebrush Sedge (Carex hystericinaa) or Bristly Sedge (Carex comosa) to me. Both are natural parts of the wetland ecosystem and, like giantslug said, way better than Reed Canary Grass! I recently saw the results of a planting done on a creek going through a local historical museum, where the Reed Canary had been removed and native species planted. The neighboring property is still infested with the grass. The contrast in beauty, biodiversity and stream quality was astounding. I am planning on going back and will take my camera, though my photo skills might not be up to it. I also happen to love sedges anyway, though (and grasses). The one you show, for example, has such graceful foliage. Many of them do tend to collapse after blooming, which can be annoying, before sending up more erect new growth. What makes your sedge a pest? Does it spread to much?
