I like the idea about the rumble strips - I have some green polywood (plastic woods used in deck chair) - never rots and the 2x4 size laying flat might be just the trick since I can easily drill a hole in them and spike them down at each end so they stay put - foot on edge of road should be enough, maybe 18 inches apart. Good thing is I can cut the grass right them without having to get off the tractor, remove, cut, put them back. I use the same material now but about 8 inches vertical - I striped them white and epoxied in a spike at the bottom - they look great but people just plaster them into the dirt by driving over them! Our street is private and narrow even though I am on straightaway - people get run off the road by larger delivery trucks. I don't want to damage their cars. One guy in the neighborhood as anal as me just pounds in snow spikes year round. I am afraid if I plant a small hedge (yew or boxwood) it will get run over, snow plowed away or killed with road salt.

i say if you are going to use it alot get the gas model. my drive is 150' long, plus i have a turn around area and the front sidewalk is ~75' and the back is another 60'. i tried using an electric weedeater with the head turned to edge, and honestly got tired of fighting with the cords. then i got a gas weedeater and love it. now i weedeat only about 1 time a month, with round up! between having over 600 linear ft of concrete to edge and close to 60 trees spread over 4 acres, i just don't have the time nor energy to do it any other way! i use the gas weedeater around the flower beds(still that is roughly 200 lf) to prevent overspray( i killed my wife's flowers and never heard the end of it!), but other than that it is pure chemical weed control.

I would wait until the grass is actively growing again, probably fall, and when it is you should be able to water well, then remove the "sod," with a flat shovel in relatively small pieces, then (as fast as you can so the sod doesn't dry out) shovel out the excess soil and level the area, and then just rake the new surface and replace the sod. And fertilize. And then water very well again. Unless you are talking about a very large area, there is no need to discard the old grass and reseed if you can just keep the old grass alive long enough to replant it in a few hours. Good luck! I have had my share of rock edges of all kinds, largely as something to do with all those I dig up. But I have removed all of them in favor of a simple trench dug with a half moon edger. So much more effective as a weed barrier, more attractive and no hassle mowing the grass! In terms of aesthetics (the only issue that’s debatable), rock edges always scream for attention when it’s the lawn and the border that deserve it. I can’t think of any merit of a stone edge excep to use them. We need a dedicated thread on uses for rocks OTHER THAN EDGES.
