there are exceptions to all rules. PI dies with minimal amounts of roundup. the secret is in applying RU with a small paintbrush on the leaves, undiluted, so that no other plant is affected. one or two leaves, touched with the brush, and the plant dies. As Kim says, there are giant roots under there, and PI will not get smothered. Look around for the larger vines climbing trees, they are particularly visible in Fall, when they are red against a bare trunk, and cut them at the base to eliminate the seed supply. They will produce a million small plants from the roots, and those you can paint next year to completely eliminate it.

Doing it every month is a great tip ladyslipper...I have been gardening organically for 25 yrs and have never used roundup or other product. We prefer to dig it out properly attired with rubber gloves, long sleeves etc. We keep seperate tools for just that purpose and seem to do pretty well with that. Thank you both for the inspiration. We went out and did our own tour this morning and it wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be. Aside from 5 locations I had already noticed, there was nothing else. All done for this year! :-)

Mia- I had no idea about the pots acting like different zones! I have always loved gardening, flower and veggies, but I have never gotten so into it and so serious about it until this year! I will be able to move the pots so if they need to spend the winter in the garage they can(but who knows at this rate winter might be more like summer). I do love Lantana and it was on my list. I saw some Artemesia and thought it was beautiful. Knock Out Roses where on my list too! But I think I am leaning more toward a climbing rose this year as we have unsightly cut off pole on the corner of the front of our property. Salvia has always been a must plant in my yard! Its too pretty to pass up! And I will DEFINITELY be hunting down a pony's tail and a bunny's tail. I don't think I have ever seen them before and I am in love! I will have to check out your link more tomorrow when I am being forced indoors! But it looks great! Helen- I figured I would have to coat that poison ivy several times before it gives up. But I just can't have it with 2 toddlers running around! mulberryknob- I think it was a sucker. I did just like you said and followed the roots back as far as I could. The one that tied to the mother plant either broke before I could go the whole way back, or it wasn't tied to the mother tree at all. Either way I took as much root as I could get. One of them was going under the foundation of the house, so I had to cut it off. I moved it to the north side of the house since the row of them is on the west, and there is one on the south already. My husband thinks I am crazy, but I am hoping this is like the Japanese Cherry and I can prove him wrong. So any tips for nursing it along would be appreciated!

I'm highly allergic to poison ivy and have gotten it several times and my face swells up, eyes swell shut and even my lips swelled up one time and nearly turned inside out and I couldn't even eat, just sip thru a straw. I was miserable and nothing helped, everyone told me to go to the Dr. but all they would do is give me a cortisone shot and I'm allergic to cortisone, did that in my teen age years and the rash got worse. After researching online I found about Zanfel cream to wash with. It's pricey but cheaper than a Dr's visit. When I feel the itch coming on I wash, sparingly, with this and so far haven't had any of the bad episodes I've had previously. There is so much of it on our property I spend lots of time with Roundup for poison ivy and brush and am making slight inroads on it. My DD was helping her Dad at my shop clearing brush and got some on her, didn't know it at the time, started itching and washed with Zanfel and helped that area. Didn't realize she had it other areas, either from the seat in her van where she had sat going home or what, but it must have went systemic on her, she's just now getting over it, has went thru a couple tubes of Zanfel, bottle of Tecnu, calamine lotion, finally went to the Dr. as a last resort as she has no health insurance. She gave her prednisone and finally she is over it. Was going to give her cortisone shot but when told of my reaction decided against it. My DH can play in it all day and has not one problem, luckily for some reason I haven't gotten any from his clothes.
