I dont know if i have infected mosquito bites now or poison ivy. I have small sores in a number of places that itch and feel bad. That is sad that you tried immediately to wash it off and you still got it. i know they sell somethin gin the stores now that if you use after exposure it stops it. I dont think you would have to worry about getting it where you walk in the yard. You would have to touch the plant directly. I know some people sware they get it if they burn it and the smoke will give it to you, but i dont know if that is really the case. I hope you feel better. I did that too where I was weeding and viola I look in my hand and am holding poison oak!!!!!

If you burn poison ivy and inhale the fumes directly that can be extremely dangerous.

There is nothing you can put on grass, odds are you didn't spread much of the oil. But technically if you step on the poison ivy and walked on the grass the oil could be on the grass.

I cleared out an area of my back lot line and got a serious case of it...its really sucks. Just don't itch, there could still be oils on your skin and it can get under your fingernails.

PI oil sticks around on clothes, gardening gloves shoes. Everything should be washed in hottest water possible. It would take a lot of tecnu to wash a load of clothes, and I've been wondering if a good strong detergent in hot water would work as well.

So using your bare hands to untie and take off shoes that were in pi could transfer the oils to your hands. Same for pulling off pants and shirts which have been in pi. Idon't know for a fact that it is the same level of exposure as bare skin exposure directly to leaves, but for those of us who are highly sensitive you cannot be too careful.

Personally, if I got in the thick of it I'd put on disposable gloves to disrobe and put the laundry in the wash. Take off the gloves by pulling them off inside out so the contaminated surface in on the inside (a little tip picked up in hospital work with infectious patients)

There was the slightest bit of oil on something I once used to remove poison ivy, and I kept getting a batch of it on my lower arms every year for three years after there was no poison ivy in my yard! This is truly one of God's greatest annoyances ---- second only to my son-in-law

I think I got extremely lucky yesterday, at least nothing is happening so far. DH and I went to a self-storage unit that we rent to re-organize(we've been crammin' and jammin' for a few years). The storage building is on the edge of a field, with a few clusters of trees. We pulled out an empty trash can and there was a mouse and a nest in the bottom, so DH took the can and laid it down near the trees in the(mowed)grass/weeds. I went over and slid the nest out, I couldn't tell if there were babies, but the mouse ran into the nearby brush/trees, so I gently placed the nest in the same area under some plants with large leaves. As I stood up I looked at those leaves and thought "three leaves...three leaves...three leaves...oh carp!" Everywhere I looked there were three leaves. I back-stepped carefully until I was on gravel. Luckily, I was wearing gloves(the rubber dipped kind). Now, I have never in my life come across PI and always thought I would never recognize it, but I've read so many posts about it here at GW and checked out the photos, that I knew that's what it was. I showed DH where it was and very carefully peeled my gloves off(the way Idabean suggested)and tossed them into the brush. I still don't know if any oils got on my shoes...I sprayed and wiped them down with Windex as soon as we got home, before I took them off. I'm keeping my jeans and socks separate from the rest of the laundry until I can wash them alone.
So far, I haven't had a bump or an itch, so maybe I dodged a bullet. Then again, I don't react to Sumac or Virginia Creeper, so maybe I'm one of the lucky few. We've never been to the storage unit this time of year, usually in the fall and spring. We'll be extra careful from now on.
