Tomatoes and Peppers

I live in the Dallas area. I have 24 potted up peppers and tomatoes growing in 4 and gallon buckets. My potting mix drains very well. I moved my plants into the afternoon shade and they get shade from about 3 pm on. I am about to drape soaker hose over them now that I do not have time to water in the mornings anymore. Both tomatoes and peppers will be on the same hose and a electronic timer. Will the pepper start complaining if the they get the same amount of water as the tomatoes. I have noticed that my peppers usually can be water every 2 to 3 days and are very happy and keep out new growth every week. My tomatoes seem to want a heavy watering every other day. Should I i leave my peppers off the soaker hose or put them on the same line?

I have several pepper plants in a raised bed that also has cucumbers. The cukes have to stay consistently watered or they will droop and they might make bitter fruit. The peppers in that bed are on the same soaker hose and get a heavy deep watering every other day. They are in full sun and flowering/fruiting very well right now in our 100 plus degree weather. That could be because of the temp drops we had here in early July...

I would guess that they would be fine on the same line as your toms, but if it's possible to to do two different lines then I would do that, in your situation. It won't kill them if you have to make do until you get to the store, though.

Woops, I automatically thought you were talking about hot peppers. Were you? My peppers are hot, not bells.

I've read that plenty of water can make your peppers mild. Don't really know if it's true... I've tried stressing mild tasting peppers in the past during August by letting them get droopy before watering and they did get spicier. But it could have also been the heat.

LOL! Thanks! I get it now. Dcarch, I know how you feel. I did that once in an online group, started a phrase that caught on. It was heavily used by a group who didn't like me. I thought it was funny. ;) I gotta say, the OP tomatoes just look like tomatoes to me, without the sketch for comparison. The mouth on your green tomato, with the obvious eyes, is truly catty.

I do my seedlings under lights in a converted garage. So the temperature there fluctuates with the outside temp. When the outside temp is 10F, the temperature inside that converted garage is barely above freezing. BUT, I have the plants under fluorescent lights, and not LEDs. The advantage of that is that fluorescents produce some heat. LEDs don't. So I regulate the temperature by pulling a blanket over the setup. Pull over more for warmer, less for cooler. It's not an automatic thermostat, but if you check on them once or twice a day it works great. Long ago I was intrigued about going to LEDs, but not so anymore. If I did, I'd need heat mats. I grow them all in 9oz paper cups, so I shoot for 4 inches tall at plantout. At 70F, that's four to five weeks for tomatoes. Takes a bit longer for peppers. I guess in principle you could speed them all up more by going warmer. For tomatoes and peppers, the optimum temperature for seedlings is actually more like 85F. Yes, down here we are blessed to have a very long growing season. But it doesn't work that way for tomatoes! Plant out in March, and you're all done in July. Some people try for a second season in the fall, but survival of outdoor seedlings when the temperature is over 100F is chancy, and keeping the mature plants going in those temps requires some effort, if fungus doesn't get them first.

I have both hot and bell peppers. Only problem is I lost the plant tags. Some of of the seed mixes had all the seeds together when I bought the seeds. I have mostly a mixed salsa seed mix and hot pepper mix. I try and keep the same amount of water for all of my peppers. I think I have 2 California Bell peppers and 1 one banana pepper that are not hot.
