Torpedo Grass

Have the dread torpedo grass in centipede and bermuda (Tifway) lawns. So far, only thing I've read is Drive 75 and (Vantage or Manage); one for centipede, one for bermuda.

Questions: I'm leary of commercial lawn care companies. Is there a prayer of a chance that I can manage to control the torpedo grass on my own without killing the centipede in one lawn and bermuda in the other? When's the best time in lower Alabama, how often, and anything else I need to know and/or read.

Thank you so much,

Dianne

Dear Dianne,

Thank you very much for the inquiry. One option for you is to apply the herbicides yourself. You can obtain Drive in small quantities from LESCO stores and possibly other places as more and more are starting to carry it. I believe you can get the Manage as well. The summertime is the best time to combat this weedy grass. It will take patience and multiple applications. Follow the directions on the label, please.

Again thanks for the inquiry.

Respectfully,

I think Nel might be right. I did not initially think it was seashore paspalum because it seemed much too coarse but I just found an article that states there are roadside varieties that are much coarser than those used for lawns and golf courses. It is extremely salt tolerant which explains why I found it on the beach. It is also more shade tolerant and darker green than bermuda grass which also describes the grass I found. I wonder why it is not used more often for lawns.

Bruce, I've had great (a relative term!) success with the spike traps. I've tried both the bear-trap type and the vertical spikes from Victor. The spikes were very successful when used in a very specific way. Find an active tunnel. Gently remove a 8" section of the tunnel roof. Hard pack a "speed bump" of soil or even a solid object like a small section of wood into the floor of the tunnel. replace the sod section of the roof and set the trap directly over the "speed bump". The concept is that the speed bump will force the mole into the trigger to release the spikes. Please place a large bucket or box over the trap so pets and kids don't mess with the trap. Here's the best advice I can give - if a trap has been tripped, STOMP on the top of the trap to send the spikes into the ground. I've had two "get off the hook" on me...never again. It's a shame as they are really neat looking animals and they appear to be pretty clean. But, they have thrashed my yard in the past. Do not mess with the noisy windmills or electronic devices...snake oils. The spike trap is the way to go. I did not have any success with the bear trap type but you may want to give it a whirl. Also, once you've nailed 2, 10 will come to take their place. Moles abhore a vacuum, apparently. Don't stop setting traps until you're certain they're gone.

Neil Sperry actually says the tallowtree is an acceptable tree for North Texas. We have 2, they were here before we were, but I've noticed they don't make any of the berries/seeds, so I don't know if they're sterile, or male trees? I don't know enough about them to know what the deal is, but we haven't seen any mess or seedlings. They're actually very pretty in the fall.

Weed ID as much as I can Unidentified alien life form. I've never seen that. Broadleaf even though it's needly Oxalis or black medic. Broadleaf often called clover but it isn't. dandelion thistle dallisgrass If 2x per week mowing is not for you, you might look into St Augustine. It requires much less maintenance. Don't let the cost scare you. If you are patient and don't need an instant change over, you could put in one piece of St Aug in the front on each side of the driveway and a couple pieces in the back, overall cost so far is less than $10.00, then just let those grow out into the bermuda. St Aug spreads at about 10 feet per year when the temps are in the 70s. As the St Augustine spreads, the bermuda will go away. If you want to do your bermuda properly, that requires frequent mowing and monthly doses of fertilizer. St Augustine can go 2 weeks before mowing and only needs fertilizer 3x per year. I can tell by looking at your neighbor's lawns that they're not doing frequent fertilizer and likely are mowing too high, too. Also if you want to keep the HOA away, you should invest in a string trimmer to manicure the edges of your lawn at the concrete. Right now even with a haircut it looks like a bad haircut with the runners trying to escape. I use a battery powered Black & Decker string trimmer. It's perfectly fine and quiet for simple lawn edging. If you are interested in organic fertilizer, you can save a lot of money by using the raw materials that go into organic fertilizers. I like ordinary corn meal and alfalfa pellets. Both are available in plain brown bags at the feed store. Application rate is 15 pounds per 1,000 square feet. After your initial dose you can continue with the same rate or double or triple it without fear of hurting anything. Bermuda can take all the fertilizer you can throw at it. The only glitch with organics is they take a full 3 weeks to see the improvement. So if you're planning a party and the grass is yellowish, fertilize 3 weeks before the party. For your garden plants and veggies, you can put a heaping handful under each plant on a monthly basis.

I have the Torpedo grass in my rose bed. It is in the center and surrounding the bushes ....it is everywhere! How can I kill it and not harm my roses and other plants? I heard one person say that it does not harm some plants but which ones???? I have roses, lilies, annuals, salvia, gaura and others... it is growing like wildfire! I see it all over Jacksonville!

I originally saw a small bit of odd grass among my centipede about 3 years ago but my lawn service technician said it was an early form of centipede. Little did he know! This stuff has grown to large patches in several areas of my back yard. It's awful, and I'm wondering what threat it is to my trees, since it has such a network of bamboo-like runners deep under the surface, as well as rhiizomes that also resemble bamboo. It has gotten much worse this year, in spite of my attempts to control its further spread and encroachment into flower beds. I dug up a sample and took it to the county extension office, and the agent identified it as torpedo grass. Do you agree that's what this is, and do you have a suggestion for eradication? I hate the sound of "control" because I see this invasive grass as a threat to desirable grass. The beautiful centipede has been totally replaced by the invasive grass in large areas, and I only see this getting worse. I also see the possibility that this grass will rob the shrubs and trees of water and nutrients, and eventually it will be the only thing left. It seems hopeless, but I hope you're going to tell me it's not. And I'd also love to know where this came from-----potted plants from South Florida, perhaps?

I recently put down some zoysia in pool area. It is getting taking over by torpedo grass. What can I do to control or kill this type of grass because it is starting to take over the beds and other areas of the subdivision? I have all types of different foilage. What will it harm or not harm? Please, please respond. I am desperate to get this matter under control and noone seems to be able to help me. Thank you.

I found the cure. I have ripped up all my grass and am in the process of replacing it with an "Arizona" yard. Full strength cooncentrate Roundup I applied with a smile. The project may cost a bit, but nothing compared to battling this stuff from Hades while the expenses of lawn maintenance pile up...I'm 61, so it's about time I sell the yard stuff and just enjoy the pool and trips to the gym.
