Some type of Animal?

Yard Doctor

I live in the foothills of Upstate SC in an established neighborhood. My yard is very shady. Problem involves front yard where I have many trees, some grass, some moss, and some very thin areas with little grass. I have noticed some small holes about the size of a quarter to a half dollar in the front yard and suspect I have some type of mole/rodent. Is that possible? Just my opinion but this is not a snake/s. And if so, what type of action should I take? I know this information is rather thin but that's all I have to go on.

Thanks for any advice.

Hi,
I just popped in here to find out how to get rid of wild strawberries in my grass and saw your post.I have a lot of those same holes in my yard this year. I have seen chipmunks(you may call them ground squirrels) disappear into them. I have always had these critters around,but this is the first year for so many holes in the yard. Maybe these new holes correlate to the 4 new cats that have started to hunt my yard this year. I don't know how you would get rid of them other than trapping or poison. If it is moles you would see the raised tunnels throughout your yard.

Thank you very much for your inquiry. Mice or voles would make holes. Also, rodents that bury stuff make holes. Birds will make holes when looking for insects. I am not sure what the holes are from, however, it sounds like lack of turfgrass
vigor may be a bigger problem. If the fertilizer is up to par the holes are masked.

I would much rather it be a deer or a woodchuck than a rat. We had a nice rain a few hours ago, if it's deer, there may be tracks. I could throw a sheet over them tomorrow night to see if that makes a difference. I came across a site just now that had great solutions for specific animals in the garden. I will keep you posted if I catch this critter in the act or find out what works to stop it.

Refill with the soil that is there first and foremost. If the soil was too scattered to refill the entire hole, then use garden soil or sand. It should mound up slightly to allow the soil to settle in the next few years. If you have bermuda or Kentucky bluegrass, the grass will cover over by itself. If you have fescue (like the Marathon varieties), then you will need to reseed. I would reseed now and not wait until it gets warm. In your area it might be wet and warm enough for the seed to sprout by itself in January.

Yes, top is raccoon: long skinny "fingers" with claws. Nothing else looks like that. Bottom is a dog or coyote: visible claw marks, single forward-facing peak on the rear pad. I'm thinking dog because the tracks are almost round and coyote tracks are usually oval. They have relatively small feet compared to a dog of the same size and weight. Bobcat would show no claw marks unless it was running fast - and this animal is moving randomly - and cats have a double peak on the rear pad.

Rabbits, most likely. That's the kind of damage they do. Some stems they eat and some they just bite off and leave. A good cage like Jim 1961 made for his Julia Child will work. Make yours just like his. Looks like Jim's is 16" high. It needs to be at least that high, don't go any lower. 24" high is even better. A big rabbit will be able to reach over a short cage as he stands on his hind legs and reaches over the top of it. They can stretch like a slinky! The fence wire Jim used with the 2X4" openings is good, chicken wire is too shaky. Rabbits will stand up leaning on chicken wire and feast on the rose bush they can now reach as it buckles in under their weight. Unfortunately baby rabbits can get through a 2X4" opening so a ring of 1' high chilcken wire fastened to the fence wire cage at ground level like a collar, is needed. Rabbits can destroy a rose garden. I'm truly sorry for your problem, but there is a solution, and a passive one that works 24-7. Looks a little odd, but it works.
