Question about Crepe Myrtles

We had a landscaper out to help us figure out what to do with our drainage problem. While he was here, I asked him what he would suggest I put by my front door, in place of the Yaupon.

I mentioned that I liked the idea of something with white blooms, so he suggested a dwarf or weeping crepe myrtle. Our house faces north and only gets late afternoon sun. Do you think it would do okay? Second, he mentioned that it would need to be trimmed every year. I'm looking for something that's carefree and I know people trim their crepe myrtles (me included), but I'm always hearing people say that you're not really supposed to. He said if I didn't, I would end up with a lot of dead growth on it. I'm just wondering if the shrubs are different than the trees. Do they really have to be trimmed back every year?
