My local HD had dozens of them last spring and summer. There tends to be a lot of uniformity in HD selections, so you might give yours a try in the spring. I think I got my Dynamites at their summer clearance later into the season ($3.00 each I believe)--One even bloomed the very first season. I've seen the reds around here and they are really nice but I also have no problems with more magenta tones. Attached is a photo of the Zuni from last summer. They will do fine in containers! Just need to protect from hard frost in a pot. Your house is too warm for overwintering them.--maybe a garage, chilly cellar, the attic... Fact they are so easy in containers adds to he collecting bug. Okay, no more landscaping space so they can always do well in a container and fact that they are deciduous means that don't need light in their winter retreat. Still, I managed to plant 5 more today on a new western exposure fence neighbor recently installed. They transplant well and it is supposed to pour tomorrow. If you do plant again in the ground, make sure you don't make my first mistake with the very first one I got years ago. I bought a big, very robust cultivar and planted too house to the house. They were eventually very big, constantly needed pruning and were removed.

Definately do cut out at the base, all trunks in your CM that are blooming pink. Then be certain to pinch off any new growth that the roots of those cut off branches try to keep growing. If you keep the new growth pinched off then only those roots should suffer,and the white blooming branches should begin to experience an advantage, which helps them to prosper more. Unless it is just the lighting cast on the day you took that photo of the pink blooms, the pink blooming trunks might be a Biloxi Crape Myrtle. Those bubblegum pink blooms, in my opinion are a much nicer sight than some of the more pale easily washed out pinks that some CMs produce. Anyway I only tell you this to let your know that if you do like that particular pink color and would like to have a CM growing someplace else with that color, Than simply order or find at some local nursery a Biloxi Crape Myrtle that is already blooming and that you can confirm it really is a Biloxi Crape Myrtle.

The varieties that we have are Natchez (white) and Tonto (red). The reds are just now putting on buds, the white are now budding out again for the second time, but the first bloom was minimal. We had a horrible winter last year, temps down in the teens and several days in a row where it didn't rise above 40 degrees. So since I haven't done anything different to them, I'm thinking the weather had a big part in it. It's almost as if we did live in NC, because we usually go there in August and that's when theirs is in full bloom. And this is the first year that the trunks have increased in size to this extent, so maybe the blooms had to wait until that was done, not sure.
