winter of 2014: what died/survived/thrived?
Comments (12)I'm in Central MA, zone 6a but felt like 5a (or even 4 some nights) this past winter. It got down to -15 to -18 a few times and below zero many times. Very cold for a long time. The only fruit trees that suffered the most are peaches. Lost flower buds anywhere from 20--80% and some young shoot tips were dead, too. Well, I had kazake pomegranates in ground with protection but it looked like I did not protect them well enough. It looks quite dead. I forced the zone on them in the worst winter in years so.... All other fruit trees, apples, A. pears, E pears, A plum, cherries (sour and sweet) and blueberries showed little to no damage. Even my strawberries have survived well but it is next to the house so that helped. I just planted nectarine, A.persimmon, E plum this year so those do not count. I live in a suburb with houses close to one another and many tall trees all around. That probably help with wind protection and makes my micro climate not as cold and windy as those living in more open areas....See Morewinter flowering shrub from seed
Comments (0)Hello, Can some one tell me any winter/autumn flowering perennial or shrub which can be propagated from seed. Temp in our winter does not go beyond 5C. I am a beginner and want to sow something hardy which can be planted in a container and which could flower in its first year. also the temp in summer here can reach over 100F. Fragrance would be plus. Thanks. ps. what about correa alba and luculia gratissima? Regards, Muhammad Khabbab Lahore...See Moreneed ideas on flowering shrub to survive winter winds
Comments (4)My two rhodies [anah kruschke] are at the end of a bed and jut our just beyond two tree trunks [1-1 1/2' -one cherry and the other maple] just up to the point where there is a slope down to the street. Unfortunately the prevailing wind pattern goes against the side of the tree trunks that they are on. Do you all think a different variety of rhododendrun like Lee's dark purple or PJM lavender would be better? Also was wondering about a weigela or the bushy salvia - Dark Knight. Any thoughts?? Appreciate what you have said already....See MoreWinter survival news - shrubs
Comments (12)Illicium 'Woodland Ruby' and I. mexicana came through their second winter with only slight leafburn in a non-sheltered location. Manglietia insignis, Parakmeria, Choisya ternata (green & 'Sundance') had only moderate leafburn. Choisya 'Aztec Pearl' was undamaged. choisyas are ready to bear their fragrant white flowers. Edgeworthia papyrifera flowered profusely. Cyrilla arida and C. 'Small leaf' were burned with some dieback. Green Loropetalum chinense had about 50% burn and the bronze/purple forms were (as usual) 90% burned with minor tip dieback. Even the less hardy Loropetalums flower and increase in size each year. Cornus kousa angustata had it's usual foliage burn at around 10. Green and variegated Ternstroemia is in good condition. Daphne odora in several spots had some burn and partial flowering Ilex buergeri had only partial leafburn-better than when I used to protect it....See Morebostedo: 8a tx-bp-dfw
