Hi Everyone. It's time for the Beans, Beans, Beans swap. Anyone and everyone is welcome to join this swap.

Here are the rules:

This swap is beans only.

Please send me an email as soon as you can. Please send me a wish list so I can get you the Beans you would like.

You will receive the same amount of seed packets that you send in, a 1 for 1 swap.

Send in as many packs as you would like, there is no limit. Do not send more than 5 packs of the same variety, or will get the multiples sent back to you. Please put 10-16 seeds in each pack. A smaller amount for rare varieties is ok. You can send in extras if you would like so I have a variety of beans to send out to everyone.

Please send only viable beans, beans from the grocery store will not sprout.

Feel free to send in commercial beans and/or beans harvested from your own garden. Just please indicate if they are commercial or garden harvested on your packet and please include the year they were harvested. If you just harvested your, please allow them to dry so they donÃ¯Â¿Â½t mold while in the package.

Please send beans that are no older than 2 years! No bean mixes.

Send your beans in a bubble envelope. However much it takes to send them in, please include that same amount in your package for its return. Also include if you can an address label, it is not required it just makes it easier for me to get your package back to you. Please include a list of what you are sending; this just helps me make sure that you donÃ¯Â¿Â½t get back what you sent in.

If you are sending them in a bubble envelope, please make sure that the envelope is strong enough to protect the beans coming in and going out. I will reuse the same box/envelope that you sent your beans in to save you money.

I will hold sign ups for 2-3 weeks. Sign ups will end on November 15th. Please send in your seeds as soon as you can, so I can get them out to you quickly. Please send them in by November 25th.

Hi zeedman, hope everything is going well with you. Thanks again for the two kinds of "MN" cowpeas, they did wonderfully even with the bad growing season we had here. My project is making slow progress. I have more raw data to go through than I have time available. Much bigger project than I anticipated (as is usual for me). I thought it would be safer to have all my hard work on an offline computer so I acquired a second one that is dedicated just to the project. I linked a database to a spreadsheet. I settled on using the database for general information and I give every variety its own number. That number is referenced on the spreadsheet for further details and information. The spreadsheet offers a quick side-by-side comparison of varieties by using category checkmarks. Works pretty good. The thing is, the more time I spend and the more knowledge I acquire, the more obsessed I become. Beans sure are fascinating. A big problem is categorizing because of all the different terminologies and because many beans have multiple uses. The yellow/wax was one small issue, but there are more such as Romano beans versus flat beans, Lima (and Fava?) versus broad beans, French beans and filet beans, horticulturals and shellies, etc. Are cornfield beans distinctly different from typical pole beans or just regional terms for the same thing? Why are runner beans varieties of Phaseolus coccineus but 1/2 runner beans are varieties of Phaseolus vulgaris? That kind of confusing stuff. I am having to constantly go back into my "finished" data and correct errors or update information. Two steps forward, one step back. Second big problem is that I wanted a photo of each variety with beans set on as well as a photo of the dry seed beans. Not going to happen in my lifetime. ;-) Was such a distraction and time-killer that I dropped the whole idea for now. All in all I would say I am generally making progress, considering I only have time to work on it in the winter. I am a lot farther along now than when I last posted on this thread, but have a long way to go. I branched out into greasies, cutshorts, fall beans, teparies, tropical and subtropical beans, asian beans, foreign varieties available commercially, extinct varieties, etc. I also am working on cowpeas and soybeans just because I am so interested in them. When I get frustrated with the snap and dry beans I work on these categories instead. The biggest eye opener by far is how much duplicity is out there. I am convinced a great many varieties are actually the same ones with different names. I have come across seed companies and even growers and market sellers that arbitrarily change the names for selling purposes. Heck, I am even guilty. I got some bean seeds in a trade and the woman, an immigrant from eastern Europe, didn't know what they were so I named them after the nearest towns they came from in her homeland. What am I to do, call them "Unknown 1" and "Unknown 2" forever? I don't think what I did is quite as bad as changing a name to make a variety sound "cute" or make them more marketable, but the end result is confusion just the same. Finally, I hate to sound greedy, but I think this project may be worthy of publishing if I can get it finished, rather than free-sourcing it on the web. Several people I have shown it to have suggested looking into that possibility. Wasn't my original intention but because it is so complex I now feel I should try to get some kind of return on my investment of time and energy, if possible. This is nowhere on the priority lists, though, and if it ultimately doesn't happen it is no big deal to me. My personal collection is growing. With this year's orders and trades I am at well over 100 varieties of bush and pole snap and dry beans, asian beans, cowpeas, and soybeans. We have an informal little local club of hobby growers that are all interested in these so we coordinate and plant different varieties and swap seeds with each other. Pretty fun. I grew Calypso last year. I planted the entire packet (which was something like 60-70 seeds) and ended up with about a pound and a half of beans. Also take into consideration that I planted late because I just moved, and a lot of the beans didn't have a chance to mature before frost, so if they had more time I would have gotten more. Oh, and they were also planted during a drought, which probably didn't help either. So actually I was pretty happy with them. It was the first time I grew dry beans and I got a better harvest than I expected, especially considering they were grown under less than ideal conditions. A lot of people have told me that dry beans aren't worth growing, but I couldn't resist how pretty they are. I ate one pound of them and kept what was leftover to replant. The beans are nice and fat and cooked up tender and good (though it was sad to see the pretty black and white beans cook up an ugly grey color). I use the square foot method instead of rows. Each plant needs probably about 6 inches of room (so 4 to a square foot). If you got your seeds in trade you might not have enough to get a meal out of them this year. Whenever I do trades I only get 10-20 seeds. You might have to plant them out, save seed, and then plant all the saved seed before you get enough. I'm also not sure orca and calypso are the same. Yes, they are both black and white, but I have some orca beans I recieved in trade too (haven't grown them yet), and they look different than the calypsos. They're smaller, and the spotting pattern is different. Maybe one year I should plant them both to compare their growth habits.

Andy, your beans are still NOT there? They should be. I put them in the PO mailbox last Saturday. Even if they did not pick it up until after the weekend and the holiday (Tuesday), I would think that you still should of had them by now. Although the mail has been messed up here on the East Coast because of all the snow storms. Maybe that is it. I had emailed Sandhill because I never got their catalog yet this year and usually I have an order in to them by now. I did finally get the magazine 2 days ago, but they wrote me back saying that they sent it out all the way on the 7th of January, and that they had other people from the East inquiring about where their magazine was too. So, I hope that is it. Donna, hers was sent out the same day as yours Andy, and she got her seeds, however she is right on the East Coast like me so that could be why. Angelady, did you get yours? yours should of been to you also since it was in a priority mailer box. Well Andy, I would not worry yet. Just please let me know asap when you get them so I do not start to worry! I would think Monday they would have to be there after all of this time? Shucks, I was hoping to see you post that you received them. Also Andy, incase I forgot to write it in your envie, I have some greasy beans coming to me at some point. There hasn't been a bean swap since 2010. So, after two years of growing, and a little bit of trading...it's looking like my package of 113 varieties (about 280 packs of beans) will be flooding her mailbox.

Hey Gary,
I have been spending about 2 1/2 hours this morning looking up beans. Wow! Can they taste that much different from each other? The past 3 years I have been planting mostly pole beans because they take up less room. But all my dry beans that I planted this year were bush. This spring going to plant more "pole" dry beans. My son has already built the garden box's for this year...31 box's total. That way I don't have to bend over quite so far.

Can't wait to see why kind of beans I will get in return. Snowed a couple of days ago and the stuff never melted off. Looks pretty grey out there so maybe we are in for some more 'white stuff'.

I have White Hyacinth Beans, some pods and flowers still on the vine, very pretty and rare, not sure if you all want only edible beans because this one is ornamental only.

However is Michelle going to be able to send you 280 different varieties of beans? Especially if she doesn't send you any varieties that you sent in? Uff-da.

I've explained it to Michelle that I would want to be treated like anyone else in the swap. Maybe it will be about 20, or so, different varieties for each of us.

The final total is 291 packs, going out today. That's less than the 300 I sent to the bean swap in 2010. I'm giving Michelle a break. :)

I have a question regarding planting beans. Will they cross if planted close together I mean 10' or so apart? Since I have only grown Blue Lake pole for canning and maybe 3-4 dry bush beans I have been wondering about keeping them pure.

I was always told most of the beans are pollinated before the blossum opens.

True, however limas and cowpeas can be pollinated by bumble bees
I try to have something else blooming thst they prefer and space each variety as far apart as I can.

Wow! Thanks for letting me resend my package and still be part of the swap. I received lots of new-to-me beans. Mchill did a great job matching everyone's donations to my wish list. Even the rather odd request for "beans with farm animal names" was filled....Jacob's cattle bean, dapple gray, and painted pony will likely be in my farmyard themed area next season. Not so sure if rattlesnake, flamingo, canide, orca, and Selma Zebra will go there or elsewhere :) I love them all. Thanks mchill for hosting and thanks to all who sent seeds in for the swap.

Looks like everyone is receiving great packages. I can hardly wait until mine comes. Since the swap started I have been doing a lot of research on the different beans and finding its very interesting as to what a person is saying about ones they have planted before. It's going to be some gardening year I can see that. Thanks for hosting Michelle and hope your finals went well.
