I know you are talking about wind blowing over a tree so maybe someone has experience with that, but the only trees I've seen 'falling over' are the live oaks which are really leaning, in fact almost horizonal, like some live oaks grow when crowded in a group of other live oaks. When the canopy of the leaning tree becomes weighted from the rain and the ground gets soft from the same they can uproot. There's a lot of them that grow like that in my neighborhood, but only a couple have uprooted. I guess a lot depends on how deep the roots are able to go. We have very thin soil here on top of rock, so unless a tree root finds a few cracks in the rocks in which to anchor they can be shallow rooted.

BTW, we've had 3 1/2 inches here since last night. I hope everyone's okay and their trees too.

I remember reading that pecans are flood plane trees somewhere....maybe the tree forum.

here in Arlington we are just over 5 inches (my little rain gauge) since Monday.

I've seen trees that fell over due to strong winds, and I had two trees partially fall over, but they were old. Then I also had a tree totally fall over, but it was rotten. So, I doubt that a healthy young tree would just up and fall over, but I really don't know. If you have the money, you might take the mulberry out when it quits raining. They aren't very good trees for the long haul, I don't think.

I doubt a pecan would fall over, since it has a very long tap root to anchor it. They usually break first, and the top half falls on you.

Oak trees have a very shallow root system, and that is why you will see them blown over so often. In the softened ground, it is fair to say that they could come down.

I am not sure about the mulberry. I kind of doubt it, since mulberry trees live forever and are indestructable. It is at least as difficult to pull a mulberry sapling as it is a pecan sapling, so I am betting they have a long taproot as well.

I can speak to this, since I have had a mulberry fall on the house. I wouldn't put it past the tree to do this. Just keep an eye on the dirt level around the base, and notice if one side seems to be rising. I noticed that, told DH, but he said Posh. That happens a lot around here.

Tree falling on house is not covered by our insurance, BTW.

We had several trees fall after a few years of drought, and this standing water will be just as traumatic.

Thanks for that info, Terri. I have 3 big mulberry trees, one of which is very close to the house. I have been having a fit to cut it down for a long time, maybe this is a good time for DH to do it.

I wouldn't usually just cut a tree down, but this one is a mess, gets on all the electrical and phone lines to the house, and throws berries and trash all over the patio, BBQ equipment etc.

Now, it may fall on my house, or (worse!), DH's shop! I bet he gets right on it.

So, I am willing to chop this one down.

I've got 5 Burr Oaks in my yard the oldest around 15 years old, and the youngest are just yearlings. They've been inundated with all the rain from these past 3 weeks, and sustained 60 MPH winds about 2 weeks ago.

The only trees I've had fall down are some really old Hackberry, and Willow Trees... Both REALLY HEAVY !
