Landscaping around above ground pool...

I posted this in the pool forum but haven't had any replies. I figure there are a lot of us in Texas who have pools so thought it might be appropriate here too.

I have a 15' diameter above ground pool. I'd like to landscape the perimeter so it's not an eyesore. Does anyone have any links to theirs or pictures of any?

I'd love to do a deck around it, but that won't be happening soon...so I just need some ideas on pavers, pebbles, and shrubs, vines etc that will do well in our climate.

I'm thinking first I'll lay down landscape plastic to prevent grass growth, then put down roundish pebbles that won't poke a hole into the liner, then some big paving stones to stand on every 3 feet or so and an edging of pavers by the white fence (to contain the pebbles) and the same on the yard side. I was wondering if a few Banana trees would look good planted down the sides....

So what would you do with this?

We don't have ours anymore and I don't know if I have pictures. We built a deck just around the front. The pool company told us to do what you are thinking. They sprayed something on the area where the pool would be - to prevent nutsedge from growing through and puncturing the liner. Then, we put down plastic (which was a mistake) and quarter-sized gravel three feet out from the pool. My job was to go around it every day and spray Roundup on anything that dared grow in the gravel.

Hi pat-1. I don't have any advice for you, but I hope you will get some responses regarding landscaping. I am having an above-ground pool (30' round) installed next week, and also need ideas for landscaping around it. I thought about patio blocks, but don't know how to lay them in a circular pattern. We used white marble rocks for some front yard flower borders, etc., and ended up digging out 5 tons of the stupid things and using mulch! Never again with any kind of rocks. Veta

Tigerwood is certainly a good choice, with the added benefit that it will match your existing deck. Many exotic hardwoods, including tigerwood, are actually great for poolside decks because their dense grain structure resists splintering, making them safe for bare feet, and keeps them from getting too slippery when wet. They also contain some natural oils that help resist moisture. I would definitely recommend sealing tigerwood with an oil-based sealer though to maximize its performance. A few years went by and then it got brittle and started working it's way up through the gravel. I couldn't dig it out and couldn't pick it out except little slivers at a time.

OH OK then, I should be OK with the landscape fabric shouldn't I? Or does that shred over time too?

I've thought about this all week and surfed the internet and this is what I have come up with:

In the corner by the deck I'm going to put in a "pond in a box" -a wooden planter style pond. Then I'm going to lay down pebbles along the path with 16"x16" paver stones every 16" or so. Along the fence I will put an edger.

In the far corner since it would be so much rock to fill in that space - I'm going to put in a corner garden with some some loving perennials.

Wish me luck! I'll try to post pics along the way...I've now got no dig plastic edging put around the pool and landscape fabric down. I now have to find the rock without breaking the bank! I'm curious where other people buy rock for landscaping projects? I've looked at home depot but it seems rather dear to pay $4.00 a bag for rock (I'll need over 30 bags) but I know I can't get anything delivered for that price. Is there anywhere else to buy rock (other than Lowes-their prices are the same)???

I think you'll be fine with the landscape fabric, I've never heard of it getting brittle, though I've used it and had weeds pop right through it. You'll have to be on guard constantly for nutsedge which can mess up your liner.

We bought our rock at a local sand & gravel place and they delivered it. I don't remember the cost but it took a surprising amount and was cheaper than bags at Walmart or Lowe's.

Your pond idea sound good. Can't wait to see pictures.

If it were me, I'd use thick layers of newspaper. At least they will be biodegradable and I don't think weeds will come through if it's thick enough. Landscape fabric will eventually tear up, but probly not as soon as plastic.

There is a stone place called Whiz-Q off 820. I bet there are cheaper places, but I don't know where. I need some limestone stepping stones, so I'll be looking also.

so what kind of rock did you use? i have used sand for years, but it is tracked into the pool & house. i know i need a sand base but would like rock on top. what would be best ?

First of all I have a deck around a quarter of the way around the pool. Where the rest of the pool backs up to the fence, I would like to put rock around that area. Then have a stone walkway coming off my patio to the steps of the deck. I need to keep as little grass or dirt off our feet to get into the house, esp with a toddler. We want the rock surrounding the pool so that we dont have to worry abt weedeating so much. I just want it to look clean around the pool without dealing with so many weeds. Any suggestions would be fabulous!!
