Question about staggering the planting dates of tomatoes

I was at Lowes the other day and saw a lone tomatoe plant that looked like it needed a home. Of course most people in my area have had their tomato plants in the ground for two months or more, as have I. But it left me wondering if, instead of putting all my tomato plants in the ground the same week, what if I staggered the plantings over a month or two. Would they then produce in a fairly staggered fashion over a longer period of time? Or would the ones put in last simply not have the time to develop?

Or is it a matter of knowing which KIND of tomato to plant in what sequence (ie, early tomatoes planted first and late season tomatoes planted last)? Just curious if it's possible to keep tomatoes producing from late Spring to mid Fall continuously? And if so, how?
