Tree Peonies in north Florida
Comments (7)Jeannie7 you gave me a good laugh. Most peony growers would be north of Florida. Please don't tell me you have not purchased peonies from Mano or Lindsey. They are in Canada but not in your area. If you haven't you should. Expand your education and ask where your local nursery receives their stock. Most stock is from wholesalers that could be from anywhere in the US or other countries. Many of the seedling stock is now coming from Central America to your local nursery. Wholesalers can import things that your local nursery can not. If your nursery tells you they grow their own ask to see there growing area. Most will be repotted plugs from somewhere not local by any means. My question is why are the northern sites stealing your money?...See MoreDesperate for Peonies in Texas
Comments (23)I live in Texarkana and grow peonies herbaceous Itoh and tree peonies with good results. If you are talking Austin south I would suggest tree or some types of Ithos they seem less troubled by heat. plant in and area that shelters the afternoon sun and be mindful of wind. High hot drying winds and peonies dont mix well. In dry conditons expect to water use plant wilt as a guide be careful not to overwater to avoid rot. be sure to have rich humus laden soil and mulch up to about 1 to 2 inches from the crown. I plant in fall after the wose part of the heat is not a worry.. If you got good stock expect blooms the following spring. some of the tree peonies are very heat resistant I really suggest one called ”White Crane” if my memory is good on that LOL Good Luck! here is a link as for cold try ceing in the winter pick a good freeze and spreadice and let it sit overnight a time or two. Ive used that and it helps. I have many blooms each spring. https://www.treepeony.com/blogs/peonies/growing-peonies-in-usda-zones-8-and-9 BTW my memory wasent good that tree peony I was talking about is ”Snow Lotus” not White Crane. You will see a photo in the link I provided. BTW some folks tend to be arrogant and abusive most of the time in my experience they are of little help. I do wish you the best of luck and hope your springs will be full of bloom! Peace out...See MoreGrowing Peonies in Central Texas?
Comments (5)Wimberley, Texas I planted one Peony 10 years ago in my flower garden. Each year she would come up and reach the height of one foot but no buds. This spring due to the rain and cool evening temp she grew to 2 feet and produced 2 buds. It took the buds 1 month and they opened the past four days. They are a soft, soft pink in color, approximately 4" wide and the aroma is a soft sweet pink! Just like you would image pink to be. All the neighbors have been down to witness the opening. I believe I have the only Peony Blossoms in Wimberley, Tx. It was certainly worth the 10 year wait. rr12lackner...See MorePeonies in Texas Hill Country?
Comments (5)I don't know where Fayetteville County is in TX but if you're north of Austin you should be able to grow some peonies. Itohs are gorgeous, a cross between tree peonies and herbaceous, and tend to do better in warmer areas. Another thing to look for is early blooming ones and single bloomers for mid-season. Saunders peonies are typically fairly early and have some amazing colors. If you want big double peonies you'll want to be super careful not to get late blooming ones--it'll be too hot for them by the time the buds are ready to open. Afternoon shade in the summer wouldn't be a bad idea, either. Here are a couple of sites to do some research: http://www.americanpeonysociety.org/ I'm pretty sure there's an article written by Don Hollingsworth in their archives about growing peonies in the south http://www.southernpeony.com/ She's a zone 7 so a bit cooler than you but you can see how many varieties she manages to grow. She's very good about answering questions as well http://www.paeo.de/navigation/hilf_en_1oben.html The peony database on this site has more varieties with pictures and info than any other database I've seen. Another good resource is the big growers. Both Adelman's Peony Paradise and Hollingsworth's Peonies have been very good about answering emailed questions for me before. info@peonyparadise.com and nursery@hpeonies.com respectively....See Moregnabonnand
